We took some pictures of a recent job to show how the PROPSCAN computerized measuring system works......
(These pics are of the RH wheel- from a set of 5 Blade, 38 inch Diameter Props that were damaged )

This first pic shows the prop ready to be measured in- notice the bend on blade 5…

Prop is measured in by Propscan Tech Justin Cobb…

Notice blade 5 and lack of pitch on blades 1-4 on radii .9 and .95…

Prop is then moved to the repair table and adjusted/re-measured until perfect…

Final measurement close-up. Notice how all blades are within Class 1 Tolerance Boxes and all areas are now 100%...

After Propscan tuning : cup is adjusted, bore is reamed, keyway is filed and fitted,
prop receives a high-grade finish and is balanced. They are now ready for delivery…

Hope some found this interesting. We will once again be running a sportfishermen.com member discount on
Propscan tuning this fall/winter and announcing other service specials.......Look for a post shortly....

Thanks,
Atlantis

That prop looked bad in that thrid picture.

I wonder if the owner ran it for a while not knowing how bad it was.

The readings were all over the place on the initial test. Looks like you got it as close to perfect as possible.

I wonder what that would do to his fuel milage. My uneducated guess would be a 10% loss and worse the potentional of snapping a shaft with it being so out of balance.

I love the site of freshly tuned props. They look like works of art.

Atlantis, with fuel being such an issue, how often should a boat owner get their wheels serviced?

And if you don't mind sharing what should one expect to pay for checking and minor tuning of props?

Is it wise to get them looked at at the end of our season when we pull our boats?

Great topic!

Great information that all boaters should pay close attention to if they want to optimize their fuel efficiency.

I agree.
This is that chore where you take the wheels away to a shop and they mysteriously come back all purdy ... would be neat to see how they get tuned up and conditioned.

Glad you guys enjoyed it and sorry i didnt get back sooner-(I was out sharkin yesterday-no,no mako-but a beautiful day on the water)

Fortunate One- Some great questions! Will do my best to answer.

The owner of the yacht w/ the wheels in our picture did have vibration. He knew he had hit something. What is really amazing is the number of boaters out there (with out-of-spec props) who dont realize it! With the price of fuel these days it pays to have your props checked!

We check props (for Class 1 tolerances) on the computer in less than 15 minutes. The cost is FREE !!! We even lend out our prop pullers if you need them- for FREE!! There is really no reason not to get them checked if you have any feeling whatsoever that they might not be right.

Here is a perfect example. This spring we did a wheel for Captain Tom of the Fishin Fever - a 31 JC with a single 3208 Cat. These guys are pros (avg 800 hrs per year on the water) and had been using another propeller shop for years. They thought their wheel was fine. After measuring their wheel in and showing them the reports - they allowed us to tune it.

Results- gained a knot and dropped 2 gallons an hr at cruise!
(think about it- 2 gal x 800hrs = 1600 gallons @ $4 per gal= $6,400 !!!) Regardless to say they are very pleased- only wished they had done it sooner!

The cost for PROPSCAN TUNING is based on diameter and number of blades........here is an example-

Full Service- includes: 'Before and After' computer reports for customer, computerized tuning of 5 radii to Class 1 ISO 484-2 Standards, pitch changes (if necessary), pattern blades, ream bore, file/fit keyway, static balance and high-grade finish.

Regular price for a 20" Diameter 4 Blade is $265 Ea. (we will be taking 10% off that price for Sportfishermen members beginning in Nov.)

If we measure in your wheels (and they are already Class 1) we offer a Clean-Balance-and Polish Service for 1/2 the price!!! ......a set of 20" 4 Blades would be $265 or $132.50 each! This service includes everything in our Full Service- except the Propscan tune.

Hope this helps Fortunate One! ( I realize I didnt answer a few but I will later)- We have a set of 7 Blades in the shop that have to get done!

Thanks, Ray 856.231.0106

I know you guys worked magic on the wheel I had you do for that Luhrs... The number stamped in a wheel I guess is only as good as the ones doing the work. That wheel going on that boat added a knot to her speed over the old one and was so smooth you couldn't tell she was turning...

Already have a project in mind with the big boat next you that has your name on it...
