    Buying a used boat

I found a 05 Edgewater 265 express for sale, it is actually a repo and I am going to look at it this weekend. They told me over the phone that The boat can not be sea trialed. My question is what to look at since it can not be sea trialed and whether or not it is a good idea to buy a boat with out testing it in the water.

The boat has 240 hours on it and from the pictures it looks like it is in excellent shape. It does not have props on it. It is equipped with Yamaha 225's has garmin gps and finsh finder.

I really like this stlye boat I am just uneasy about purchasing something with out a sea trial.

    Thanks for the help.

Can it at least be run on muffs. Take some 12 volt batteries hook them up and check everything you can think to check. Run the engines forward backward, check the engine tilt, the tabs, check the steering and shifters see how easy the move. Stick your head inside of every hatch you can and look for any signs of repair or damage. Walk the entire deck in and out checking for soft spots. Look for half assed wiring, like excess electrical tape wire hanging everywhere. Make sure the bilge pumps work. Some things like bilge pumps, lights, horns, are easy enough to replace if the price of the boat is low enough its not a big deal. Check all of the fasteners, welds, the connection between the upper and lower hull. Also if they will let you have a hull and engine survey done, I dont know if being a repo sale that theyll let you, but maybe. The one thing is the price should reflect not being able to sea trial.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking about the same thing as far as running the engines and whatnot. I believe they told me we can do a boat and engine survey. I also think they have a compression test on the engines they will share with me.

It appears blue book on the boat is between 50k and 60k they were asking 69k but said right off the bat they would go to 57k. I am thinking with out a sea trial they should be towards the low end of blue book.

personally,i wouldn't touch it without a sea trial...no offense, you sound like you lack experience, again,no offense...it may be in your best interest to hire someone with a little knowledge to check it out before you proceed...i would not trust reading compression numbers,i would want to see it,but,if you're unsure what you're seeing,it's a mute point anyway...
think about it like this, the boat's a repo, meaning, the person couldn't pay for the boat, right ?? what makes you think the person was able to afford the upkeep on the boat and the engines ??

    there's more:
just because the engines will run on land, under no load, means absolutley nothing, you ahve no idea how they will run under load...
another point is,why no props ?? stolen ?? what else has been taken off, stolen, whatever ??

sounds like trouble to me,and at the 57k number ?? for a repo ??

    again,if i were you,either hire a reputable guy,or keep looking...

    You've Answered,

Your own question, you said you were "un-easy" about buying a boat without a seatrial. You can talk yourself into making a big mistake if you're not careful. I know 57k may not be alot of money to some folk's, but it sure is to me. Look at the post's put up by "worldcatlemon". I'm not saying you're looking at the same thing here, but I wouldn't even consider it. You can't tell anything postitive or negative (other than the basic's) about the engine's without putting it over board and putting a load on them. No seatrial=no sale! Just my opinion. Frank

Walk away...too many signs...no sea trial...missing props...sudden 12k drop in price. I could be wrong, but I don't see this one having a happy ending. Just my 2 cent...

No offense taken, I may lack experience with boats but I do have experience with engines, electrical components etc.

Tell me if this is a bad way to look at it. If the boat is in good shape ie, no problems with the hull, interior and cabin well maintained, controls operable, wiring in check, lights work, etc. and the engines check out from the stand point of a compression test, they run and go in gear and out of gear. Then my worst risk in buying it with out a sea trial is having two motors to replace at about a cost of 25k. So if I can get the boat for say 40k is that low enough to cover my risk, meaning if I had to buy new motors I would still be in the bluebook range value of the boat.

I agree with you that just because the motors run on land doesnt mean they will work properly in the water. I just want some advise as to what my risk is and what price would make sense to purchase this boat for.

It appears from the pictures that everything is there and nothing else is missing other than the two props, I agree that is odd.

My wife and I really like the edgewater and have not found many for sale, The boat is 120k min. new and this appears like it may be a good way for us to get into one at possibly a reasonable price.

Dont bash me for my thought process, just trying to see how you guys would look at something like this. I am still not sure I can get past not being able to sea trial it.

    Thanks
