that is just what I needed. now I have to get up on top and make sure what my clearance is going to be for sure!

Hahaha Jawz .. I know I am not built for cold! should not be that bad this next two weeks anyway though. I don't know how you northern people do it.. I got out of a car at a wedding years ago in Chicago and it actually hurt to breath the air!.. bringing a boat down in 18 degrees at 22knts was not fun either.. nice tip though seeing other stuff.

I use one of those big chart kits as a map but they're not really good for opening times. Figure on killing most of a day just between Norfolk and Coinjock. MHC from there is a hop skip and jump but slows bad again after that. I tried to do North Carolina inside a couple years ago. Clear the bridge, throttle up, and the usual but found at the other end that they were spaced to have to wait and almost all were on the hour. Could have saved the fuel and just went at a fast idle and got there just as quick/
The bridge at North Palm US1 is under construction. Sometimes they open on the scheduled 1/4 and 3/4. Other days they just keep it shut for a couple hours with no advance notice.

    trip south in the ditch

hey quest,Made the trip several times, the entrance to the ditch in portsmouth to the first bridges (3 as i recall ) all open on the hour or half hour. the gilmerton bridge is actually 2 , 1 is a railroad bridge,it may open on demand but you may have to wait as trains cant stop inbound.after that is the dominion blvd bridge which can open on demand. Once clear its about 4 miles to the locks in Great Bridge,Va. I know cauce i grew up there. depending on arrival time probably good to spend the night alongside at Atlantic Yacht Basin or on the north bound side of the bridge as this time of year lots of boat traffic heading south.Probably a good place to tank up because nearest fuel stop is Coinjock NC. The next two bridges in the intracaostal are swing bridges and they open on the half hour so from one two the next is fast idle or you may hve to wait, guess it depends on boat traffic. One word of advice, when going to the bulkhead at Coinjock have your lines ready cause the tide roars thru.seen mega yacht lose power mid canal and take a boat out beware!.good food there at coinjock resturant next bridge is Alligator river entrance but its a good run cross sound if wind is calm.if its hard SW its a long crappy ride! good luck and have a safe trip. I use the WaterwayGuide ,the small book for the ditch and big charts for the sounds.

I made the trip from Norfolk to Islamorada in March on my Ocean 55. I bought the Mapteck Chartbook with the companion CD, bought a gps antenna for the laptop and used it as a back up gps on the bridge( it worked really well!!), I also bought Skipper Bobs cursing guide, This publication is dedicated to cruising north and south, it includes fuel prices, transient rates, marina approach depths, etc (http://www.skipperbob.net). Also use www.cruisersnet.net, another invaluable source for cruising south. It is updated daily with cruising information, and fuel prices!!! PM me for some great fuel stops, to save $$$, and good marinas with west marine, and food within walking distance!!!

When you get to the Keys stop in and say hi, I am the GM of Snake Creek Marina in Islamorada!!!

    Quest,
We just towed a boat from Baltimore to Pirates Cove in Manteo, down the bay and into the ditch. Bridge openings were uneventful and a good trip all in all. At 8 knots it took us 36 hours with the only stop being the locks at Great Bridge.

All the markers were in place , Norfolk, mile marker zero to Coinjock was 8 hours at 8knots. Coinjock marina is a great layover, Louis will have the Primerib ready along with a stiff drink if you want one.
I am heading to Miami from Oregon inlet the first week of October for a delivery, when you coming through ? I live ten minutes from Coinjock marina.
    Good luck !

    Troy
