Well it's that time of year again for those of us who apply bottom paint annually. What paint has worked for you? My boat will be in O.C. MD waters from the end of April to the end of October this year. Last year I used a West Marine brand CPP. It did a good job preventing barnacles but I did have some spots where some grass grew. Anyone have some recomendations or tips?
Thanks,
Will
WHich ever brand you use make sure that you dont have morte than three seasons worth of paint on at once. That bottom paint is like a big sponge and absorbs water. This in turn will hold weight and cause you to slow down. Also I now alot of guy that just spot paint their bottom. That is fine if your boat has been in the water the whole time. Once your boat has been out of the water for more than a month, then bottom paint is no good. You mighty want to look into that bottom paint that weras away, I think that is what we are goign to use theis season. Go luck and happy painting.
You are right in the sense that bottom paint becomes inactive when its out of the water because the copper in the paint oxidizes. Try lightly sanding the old paint with scotch brite or a 200 grit sandpaper to reactivate that copper. It works. The other route you can take is applying an ablative paint which will last the season and pressure wash right off when you pull the boat for the season. I am currently working on a coating which will be applied in a semi-hot process and last up to 5 years. This will be the second year in testing and so far everything looks great! I'll keep everyone posted as soon as it is ready for the market. Happy Easter Everyone!
I have been using Interlux Micron CSC with good results. Boat is in the water from mid-April thru early Oct. on the Bayside Ocean City. Water is rather still.
No current just tides and any slime is minimal only around the waterline.
CSC is a multi-season paint. This weekend I scraped some loose areas then sanded the entire bottom. No blisters or problems found. Will roll on two coats this wekend. Next fall I will strip all the paint off and then do a 100% barrier coat and paint in the spring.
Guys, thanks for the replies. So many different products out there to choose from. OC Local, it's funny you mention the barrier coat. That's something that I'm considering for next Spring as well! Thanks again for the input fellas!
