    bildge pump sucking in water

Looking for some suggestions on my bildge pump issues. Both of my thruhull for my main and secondary pumps outlets are constantly sucking in water drifting and running in certain sea contions. I do not have enough room to make large loops in my outlet hoses. I was going to place check valves in the lines but everything That I have read (Pascoe) suggests not to. The only other idea I have is using large clamshells (thne the boat will look like a 50's style car) or some type of sucpper flapper on them any body else have this issue? I am afraid if I ever loose battery power in an type of sea condtion I will swamp the boat. Boat is a 27 Ocean master center console.

I put check valves on a couple of my pumps with no problems, flappers weren't cutting it

    weigh the odds...

do you buy a set of jabsco check valves and stick them in line.. and keep some real good rule pumps on automatic float switches with a clean bilge or worry about what someone writes..?

you cannot get the bilge hoses and thru-hulls higher or put them in a different place??? no place to make a loop or fitting higher?

always makes me nervous when boats take on water..

check valves are always a bad idea , they do go bad and you will continue to take on water or not be able to pump out

I had a similar issue on one of my boats, I fabricated a stainless steel 180 degree return with a top vent, mounted the top part of the return 6" above water line. you can buy these types of returns at most boating stores mount it in you hull somewhere above water line and problem is fixed, the vent is to prevent a back flow under vacuum when the water stops pumping out.

this is a common problem with sailboaters. when the boat lists over with the sail up ,a thru hole exit could be under water and the boat would fill up with water backwashing thru the pump then as the boat returns to upright the boat would be full .

a vented return is what you need, venus has them
brass with hose barbs already in place.

    Check Valves

Had the same problem with my Custom 27 almost sunk twice when standing at the transom of the boat fighting a fish.. didn't realize until up to my ankles with water....check valves and no problems now.
    Simple.

Thats right, check valves and you will not have a problem until the valve is not working. Then its a big problem. Don't do it.

Try hard to put in a loop, it doesn't have to be at the thru hull. there are thru hills that have small rubber flaps in them, rather than putting one over it.

Sounds like the easy fix is a check valve, but it's a no no.
