between two boats
I am uppgrading from my 94 robalo 2440 (for sale repowered w/2003 150 ox66)and am between 2 boats a 02 2680 glacier bay with 140 suzukis and a 02 albemarle 28 express with volvo diesels.
I have spent a lot of time on a friends GB and love the ride, fuel economy and trailier ability. But the cabin will make overnighters a little tough and that is one of my main reasons for the upgrade. The ablemarle is new territory to me, ive read a lot and people say the a really like rock and roll on the drift. How is the fuel economy of the albes? I have read of the 28 being trailered but it not possible to run through the tunnels with out a permit , sucks. I am leaning towards the GB, but the able is still in the back of my mind, i can get a good deal on both boats hear in the next month or so.Any bodys input could help me thanks guys richard |

The albe is a great boat! I had one before my current ride and loved it. The extra sharp entry and 24deg deadrise at the transome makes for a great head sea ride. As far as the drift... rolls a little! But, that is what you would expect from such a deep hull and a 9'6" beam right? I had one without the tower so beam too was not unbearable; with a tower it might be a little uncomfortable. The Volvos are great! I had TAMD44P's at 260 per and they would scream! Opt for the straight inboard if you can, I hate outdrives... nothing but problems with them and the jackshafts never would balance correctly.
All in all, I would go for the Albe, but your type of fishing may be different. Good luck! |

Man what a delima you have. Two very different boats in my opinion. I fish on a 260 and love it. The albe is an increadible boat and I'm sure you would be happy. We trailer the GB easily but not sure how easy it would be to trailer a 28' Albe. I've seen 25' Carolina Classics trailered and they look huge, so I would imagine the 28' boats would be very large also. I'm sure someone here can speak from experience concerning trailering the Albe. Good luck

I have a 28 classic and it can be trailered. I wouldn't recommend trailering it over any great distances but 20 or 30 miles would be ok. You cannot see anything behind you. For what you are looking at I would think the 26 albemarle would be more along the lines of the boat you would want. It is considered a trailer boat. The 28 isn't considered a trailer boat but like I said before it can be done. My 28 classic touches white line and yellow line while trailering it. We only trailer to do maintenance and get out of the water if a storm is coming. This is also a boat without a tower. If the one you are looking at has a tower there is no way you can trailer it.

The 28 Albe is a good boat. I wouldn't go any smaller than that on a Albemarle. The Glacier Bay would be the best for trailering. After having been on Cats, my next one will be a Cat. You might give up some overnight room but the right and stability more than make up for it.

Hi.
I would go for the one that has Suzukis.
Volvos have bad reputation here.

Every one seems to be favoring the Albemarle, it is a fishing machine.
My Question Is do you think a pulling the same baits and teasers behind the two different boats would the the albemarle bring up more bill fish then the glacier bay cause of the hull design? I prefer the comforts of the Albe and am not scared to run it south by water rather then by road or keeping it in the water most of the year. But I think the GB will take a bigger sea head on and Ive been on a trip out of HI and we used 70 gallons of fuel in 12 hrs, I was amazed by the economy. What kind of fuel consumptions averages you albe owner with diesels get on a day offshore trolling? Thanks Last edited by juicyhook; 04-16-2007 at 10:09 PM. |

I commonly run 50 to 70 miles one way offshore and currently burn roughly 300 gallons per trip!? On my old albe with the Volvos I would average 100 gallons +/- depending on sea conditions. IMHO cats are a fad... every five years or so a company will try to bring them back. They do have there place though; if you fish in waters that are mostly a large chop they perform better than a v hull. If you see the kind of seas we do in NC most every trip, I would take the albe in a heartbeat. Nothing beats a solid heavy v bottom for the nasty stuff! Not to discount cats, just my own experience. As far as cats go, if I were to purchase one, it would have to be a twin-V. They are great boats for the money as are GB's. I guess that I could also chime in about the safety of diesel fuel compared to gas...

The IB will troll nicer with a cleaner wake and will blow away the GB when the seas really kick up. It will also stay on plane at a much slower speed. Lastly, resale is safer on the inboard diesel.
