I put a berber carpet in mine and it has held up extremely well. Take a look at what's available...I would recommend something with a real tight loop and obviously something with more tans and browns rather than whites and offwhites.

1960's style shag carpet would be "FAR OUT"

You want a nice tight Berber style carpet, but you will end up
replacing it every few years because no matter what you do its going to get trashed.

Although the berbers hold up a little better normally they will ravel like a sweater if you snag it. the "row" is continuous. pull on one end and it will go all the way to the other end. 100% olefin is stainproof but doesnt wear as well as nylon or wool. they make some really nice commercial nylon carpet that will stand up to the abuse and pretty stain resistant. As far as getting wet? damp wont hurt you...soaking wet will/ I would go with a commercial cut pile if its an enclosed area. that way if a hook is dropped and snags it you are safe

One of the boats that I use to work on had a very short nap, tight pile to it and was a darker brown, it held up pretty good. Even at that we had runners down through the salon and down to the crew quarters and master. The carpet got replaced about every 18 months regardless .... the owner spent tons of time on the boat and like it "just so"

Elias-Wilf makes a rubber backed carpet with a pile that is similar to that of a berber. Easy to clean, you can just roll it up and most of the dirt just goes to the buttom of the roll and you can sweep it up. Vacuums easy, too. The rubber back doesn't allow any sand to go through the carpet to the floor beneath. Also, no backing to worry about rubbing off, either. Good stuff. Not cheap, but holds up exceptionally well. 3 full seasons on mine and in great shape. Steve Bent on the Free Spirit put the same stuff on his rig. I think he is still down in Cape May if you wanted to stop by and see it.
