i believe 1 of these will be my new ride, once i unload the current cream puff..
we have a very choppy usually head sea ride to the ledge here(50 miles)..Charleston s.c. we troll and bottom fish on the hook and drift for swords.. i want something that is a fishing machine that will head out and not look back and not break something every trip..i will fish now in 3-5's when needed depending on the wave period..3 ft at 4sec seems to be what we have been seeing alot this year i will fish this boat 30-50 times a year and will probably run some charters out of it. so lets get all of your opinions/experiences with any of these boats listed. whatever one i get it will be diesel... if anyone here owns 1 of these and i could 1 day ride on it,that would be good too,but i really want to do as many test rides here in the charleston chop as i can.. thank you

Not sure about the other boats but the bertram 28 is probably not what you want if your planning on doing some drifting. My dad used to own a 28 and that thing rolled horribly.

after visiting the carolina classic plant and talking with kieth privott, gotta go with the cc 28 !!! those old 28 bertrams are kinda the red headed step child of the bertram family...the 27 albermarles are another good choice, solid ride, solid construction...the topaz with it's modified v hull won't ride as good as the cc and the albermarle, and personally,i know absolutley nothing about the albin... granted, you can pick up a 28 bertram for a give away price, seen gas powered rigs for $10k-$12k,but you gotta add the cost of rehabing it into the mix...so...with all that, gotta tell ya,go with the cc 28,you won't be sorry...

there is no better boat than the 27-28 albemarle when trolling and in A head sea but watch yourself if you are going to be using it on the hook and or drift fishing in anything less than ideal conditions.

A friend of mine used to have a 28 Topaz and he said that it didn't like a head sea at all. The boat seemed to drift pretty well, but I never fished with him on the hook. He did a lot of wreck fishing and I never heard him complain about it so I assume it was ok. Good luck with the search.

I have been on a 28 carolina classic before, and I was very very impressed. It felt a lot bigger then the 28 feet that it is. I kept asking the owner if it was really 28 feet, as I didn't believe him how big it felt/how small it was.(Not that it is small, but you know what I mean.) Good luck witht the decision, let us know what you choose.

25 Carolina classic Inboard is as helluva boat for its size. I am not a fan of the Jack shaft version.

Never heard of someone not making back on a 31 Bert.
The Albin will probably give you the best fuel economy and last a lifetime if you can live without the glamour. If i was going that way i'd see Bill Judge first, then Henriques if it was to be a new boat. ![]() |
