Right there in my sig you'll see that I have the Albemarle... If long runs and trolling is the game its the choice... Drift? She's a pig.
Run through most anything. Good fish raiser. Trolls in some super slop...
My particular one has peninsular diesels... Ultra efficient at fishing speed but running so so. I burn 18 gallons a day on the troll but running 1.4 MPG +-... Only about 22kts on the cruise. Could use more wheel or cup what I got. Maxed out on the diameter at 18 and running 24 pitch close to max for the three bladers I'm running
Though I'm effectively working full time freelance captaining and running a tournament team. I plan fully on not only keeping her but gonna make the switch to Yanmar 240 power with some tranny and wheel adjustment to bring me to 26 kts cruise...

Gutwrench's next ride...

Hi-ya Bob, Hattaboy weighing in:

I owned a 28B back some years ago. I believe it will meet your expectations in the head-sea dept and get you out and back on days lot's of boats that size will stay in port. On the other hand, the deadrise through the entire hull length will cause it to roll in a drift if there's anything over a well-spaced swell. Lots of them on the market - cheap. Many (not all) of the diesel boats using the stock running gear are slow, as the struts and engine room height don't allow enough wheel dia underneath to fully utilize the diesel torque, so 18 - 19 kt cruise is common. Roomy cabin for the size.

I ran a 28' Topaz express as well. Nice (even with the Volvo diesels), very efficient, great trolling. Also easy on the drift. Limited cabin for overnight accomodations and not as head-sea capable as the Bertram. Not too speedy, either.

Not much experience on the CC's. Lot's of folks swear by them, though.

The ultimate boat to drift well and run in a head-sea will have a sharp entry, and flatten out (not too much) towards the stern. Tough to find in that size...now if you are looking in the 43' + range...

You planning to fish the Sailfish XXVI this weekend?

I re-build and re-power these things...

you can rebuild a boat for a lot less than you think and have 3-5 years on warrantee and do it right! If your ever in ft lauderdale come by and see my work. we do have a bertram 28" that is our personal boat and we USE it we dive and fish this boat hard and it only has 225 four strokes and the hull speed is great! plus you can see from the top!

You will not beat carolina classics customer service. Mac will do anything he can to help you. Mine is a tank. 3-5 footers 22-25 knots and you are golden. It is definitely not a speed deamon. It does roll a little bit on the drift. I wouldn't trade mine for anything but a bigger one!!

CC28

CC28 then the Albie 27-28 the CC28 is a foot wider then the Albie and alot heavier. In the 28 foot range I don't think you can find a better offshore boat. The new Volvo D4-300's will push her along at a true loaded 28knot cruise and 30 knot light cruise and burn 1.4nmpg. She is a tank and lifetime warranty backed by the best customer service in the business. The Privott family.

The 27-28 Albie i feel was their best hull behind the 24 Albie. The Carolina 28 is just a bigger boat and probably will cost you more. Was sad to see Albie go to Brunswick some of their newer models lost their lines in exchange for cabin space. The 33 looks like a tugboat up front.

Either way can't go wrong see whats out there and ride em all in some chit then decide

G, not fishing the tourny this weekend,i will be out there but we are going to bottom fish,i'll listen for ya on the radio...

after lots of research i have narrowed it down to the True World Marine 28,the fuel burn is awesome and i have yet to find 1 negative thing about these boats on the net...that says it all...for the use i put a boat thru,i need a work boat kind of hull..TWM is as close as i can get..

now for a test drive in the charleston chop and figure out a way to get rid of the current ride...

That True World will have the same drive train that I do in my 25 Carolina. Yanmar 315 coupled to a Mercruiser Bravo IIIXD.

The Yanmar is a sweet motor, I just wish they would make it in a common rail. I think that would quieten down even more plus boost the horse power a bit. There was a class action lawsuite agaiunst the 6LP series, so if you go used you'll want to take a look into that. They were notorious for dropping exhaust valves. The 6LPA's are probably the best block they have put out. If it is a 6LPA-STP2 you won't have the same performance as the 6LPA-STP, take a look at the HP and Torque curves for both motors in the 4200-4400 rpm range on Yanmar's site and you'll see what I am talking about.

The Mercruiser's got a lot of bad press but I haven't had any trouble from mine. I did have an underwater collision that trashed the drive, but the insurance took care of that.

I do think that True World is a little optimistic on the projected speed and fuel burnfor that boat.
