I've done a little spraying, and my prefered gun is a SataJet gravity feed HVLP. Not a cheap tool, and certainly not critical to a decent finish.
Tip size is important, generally speaking 1.3 or 1.4 is good. And air pressure will change slightly based on conditions, and tip size. 3 or 4 coats works, based on how heavily you've laid it down per coat. My recommendation would be to get some test panels and do some experimenting. Awlgrip can be temperimental stuff(it likes correct temp), but I love it. Based on how comfortable you feel doing the shooting, it may be a good idea to make nice w/ a gun hand. An ice cold 30pack works very well in lubricating the wheels of negotiation at the local body/ boat shop, especially if all he has to do is show up & shoot. I've shot many a boat for 12cold beers, a sammidge( they're always my first contingency! ),and a few bucks! |

I have never sprayed awlgrip but I have sprayed lacquer on vertical surfaces. Do you mist the surface and wait for a tac....then coat to prevent runs/sags. What are the tac times ???

Did the deck on my boat turned out great. Did the sides (vertical) and had to redo roller/tip method and turned out OK but not great. I should have paid a body shop guy to spray it like Rboats suggested.

Sorry, yes, wait between coats.
Tack time will vary w/ temp, but I wait until I can touch the masking and it'll still easily fingerprint, but not stick much at all to the finger. My recommendation would also be to go light on the coats. A beginner may not want to get it done in 3 coats. You'll probably end up w/ runs. Yup Flat, I usually go light on my first 2 coats. Then a medium 3rd, and a fairly heavy fourth (that's the one that'll getcha!). It's been a long time since I've sprayed, but I've actually got 2 hustles lined up right now! Can't hunt or fish this time of year, might as well make some dollars!! dolla dolla bill yall! ![]() |

bible
Awlgrip/U.S. paint/Azko Noble has a blue booklet known as the bible to many. You get yourself one of these and it will answer all of your questions. Well maybe not all of your questions.

Awlgrig
US paints/awlgrip has a application guide you can download on line from the website. It has paint gun and tip sizes and a lot of usefull info. I personally like standard awlgrip because it is a harder finish when dry and I think looks better longer then the 2000. If you spray get a good respirator with a face piece covering your eyes, Ive seen guys spray with a rag over their face and thats just being stupid.

I'll second the Bible Bubbie, loads of info in there. If you are going to spray with Awlgrip you need to read it FIRST!!!!
Just my opinion, Troy |

Captain Jay, I assume you take your boat to Wancheese to get it sprayed. Do you know what they charge to spray? Do they charge by the foot or what?
