Buy as good as a gun as you can afford, I prefer a binks HVLP gun. The 2000 is more forgiving than the grip. Lots of Light coats reduces the runs, just let them get tacky between coats. You did not say how big a boat you will be painting, but for a big boat you may want a hand pot hooked to a gun.

all in all you can sand and buff the 2000 and the grip you cannot.

Rugman,
I have done it both ways and I my advise is to sand your hull smooth without sanding through to the gelcoat and roll and tip it again. I had better results this way. The reason I sprayed was I painted a 35 footer top and bottom and I rolled a 23 footer. I was advised when tipping to use only vertical strokes from the top down. I see no need to prime your boat again unless it is that rough. I used awl grip when I rolled and sterling when I prayed. I got in touch with a sterling sales rep which was more helpful than everyones two cents. You should try to find an awl grip rep to talk to for the best advise. Either way I am sure you will make an improvement. Small intresting bit of info is that FEADSHIP Megayachts who build boats over 100 feet paint them with awl grip using only brushes. (no spray. no rollers.)

Not wanting to hijack the thread but I am considering awlgrip for my cockpit floor. It has a no-skid gel goat surface that is stained and worn. I was thinking about rolling / brushing the finish on. Any suggestions or pointers?

My 2002 Grady White 265 Express was sprayed by Crocker's Marine in SC, they have a done a bunch of Grady and Parker hull's. My hull turned out great and still looks brand new, I'm sure you could call them and play dumb and ask questions about the sprayer and such, but personally, if you have never done it before, find someone who has, either a yard or a friend because that stuff can run and drip and look ugly if not done properly.

Pay someone with a clean booth to spray it. Otherwise you are wasting your time.

That is the best advice I can give you.

dont know anyone at indian river with a booth have seen a few rolled outside mine included and results were fair.but i want to try to spray it i am aware of the bugs that come from nowhere and attach themselves but not a problem either i am more concerned with air pressure.the one job i seen sprayed waas at 55psi which seems high but it worked for the guy who did a few boats.any thoughts thanks
