Arrow Atlantis Propeller - Latest "Ding"

We have decided to post an occasional thread showing our latest repair work. We will try to mix it up - from 5,6,7 and 8 blade high-performance wheels up to 50" diameters to our aluminum and stainless steel repairs. We will also show some of our welding and machining work.

We will try to give as much detail as possible- but customer, boat names, and specific propeller brands will not be mentioned. As we all know, if you use your boat sooner or later you will hit your props!
Our main purpose is to show prospective clients our repair capabilities. Hope some find these posts interesting.

The pictures shown are of a 30" diameter lefthand wheel. These are high-performance propellers recognized as one of the best in the world. They are a high camber design with a variable pitch distribution and are commonly used on 30+ knot vessels. The yacht these are from is a 60 footer with an easy 32-34 knot cruise. As you can see the damage was substantial.

After the use of hydraulics and hand tools to get the propeller closer to spec it is measured in on the PROPSCAN computer. NOTICE how far it is still out on initial measurement.

Adjustments are made (both hydraulically and manually) in smaller and smaller increments until the propeller is perfect. Every time an adjustment is made the propeller is returned to the computer and re-measured. The PROPSCAN computer completely maps the prop- showing the techs the areas that need repair. It is not unusual for a propeller to be measured 30-40 times before completion.

Final Measurement. As you can see all pitch measurements now fall inside the Class 1 ISO Tolerance Boxes at all radii. Notice especially the 4 bar graph on the right- this is the average pitch of each blade. This propeller is perfect. All 4 blades are equal in pitch, camber, and section shape resulting in the least amount of slippage possible thus providing maximum performance!!

After PROPSCAN tuning the wheel is given a high-grade finish and statically balanced.

It is now ready for delivery to customer. He will never know he hit anything. It will perform exactly as or better than new. Period.

    Thank you for reading,
    Ray / Atlantis

Okay, I have a question. On a wheel like this with a complex blade geometry, do you need a good blade to use as a baseline, or do you have a database to tell you what the correct profile shoud be?

Also, I'd like to see some pics of the low-tech end of this. You don't need to show me a guy swinging a sledge at the prop, but a pic of one in your press would be interesting.

Avenger great question, you must have some propeller experience... The Prop Scan computers have a database of propeller designs to choose from. However, it also has a very useful "capture" feature. This allows the technician to map and save the camber and pitch distribution of a "good" blade- and apply it to the others as you suggested.

I will include some pics of our hydraulics in use in future posts. Thanks for your interest!

Propeller experience mostly from owning them. But I my background is re-manufacturing/manufacturing so I'm familiar with rebuilding, and I know what a CMM is. So I'm always interested in how things are made, and it looks like you do some very nice work!

I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. Thanks.
