Thumbs up Assistance needed 98 Volvo 5.o Gi - injected

I'm in the process of purchasing a new ride powered with twin 1998 Volvo 5.0 Gi (302 block)injected with jack-shafts to dual prop outdrives hours on engines 450 -- raw water cooled on fresh water lake. Are there any areas of concern I should be exploring or problems encountered with this power?

    Thanks for input !

These are probably Chevy 305's, not Ford 302's....Volvo wasn't using Fords in 1998 to my knowledge.....

    Just an FYI

    take a closer look

those engines for the most part are pretty trouble free.a few things concern me,first the age of the engines '98 i would question the integrity of the manifolds and the risers, usually they have a life expectancy of 5 yrs, after that you're on borrowed time!!
second thing is the drives, volvo dp series are these??? the volvo drives are pretty bullet proof, however they should be removed from the boat yearly, for inspection purposes, this is the correct way.the bellows, the drive shaft bellows have a life expectancy too, at '98 i would question them as well...have the engine compression tested, inspect the plugs when they're removed-look for signs of rust,or the fact the porcelan is extra white-both of these signs show water is entering that cylinder.a compression test will show the general health of the engine.also perform a efi system scan-this will give you the true running hours of the engines and will also confirm any fault codes stored.....if you have any other questions drop me a pm or email me....
    hopes this helps you out!!!

Careful cleaning around these engines. Water, soap, oil, etc have a bad habit of gathering around the O rings where the injectors seat. They actually sit in dimples recessed enough so this can over time be a problem and as rust and dirt find their way past the o ring to the seat. problems can slowly materialize. Keep Wd40 and other lubricants out of there too as they can eat at the rubber and speed up the process...

I have a 1999 model 5.0 Volvo to duo-prop. Raw water cooled...run it in the salt, not fresh. I have over 1300 hours on mine and it still runs well. I replaced risers/manifolds last year and they were ready to be done. Other than that, I've changed out items as per normal mtce (implellars, plugs, wires, belts, etc.) Did have a leaky water pump which was replaced under warranty as well as a rusted out power steering resovoir (leaked) replaced under warranty. All in all, it's been a good power plant. And yes, this is a Chevy 305 block...

There are a lot of them out there and I have not heard of anything to "watch out" for like some of the big blocks and their water ingestion issues.

    Good luck.

Assistance needed 98 volvo 5.0 Gi

Thanks for the feed-back, I am in the initial stages and commencing my list for engine survey and outdrive. Considering the age of unit all with orginal equipment - no relacement of belts, hoses, risers etc it will be a extended list. I did go to the Volvo web site and searched out the 5.0Gi 1998 and it comes up a 302 cu in, and the broker states it is a ford 302? I am pursuing further and if any additional items that I should address in my survey would be welcomed.

    Thanks,

    GP

I am very surprised if they used a 302 in '98 for their block. Not that it's a BAD thing, I personally like the Ford 302 and 351W motors, mine is still purring away from '74 when Formula dropped her in the hull originally LOL

I did rebuild the heads this year finally after 31 years, and did manifolds, risers, and obviously new top end gaskets (for the head job). Just got done doing some work that was my fault this past month (driveshaft U-Joints and Tranny Output shaft bearing) and while we had the motor out, put a brand new Oil Pan/Dipstick on her. Preventive Maintenance

Anyway, I'd still check (plan on replacing) those risers (& inspect the manifolds too!)
