    Gettinwet,

Don't know how you'll make out but, Mack Boring is who I would call about a Yanmar set-up. Cummins/Mercruiser has a 4.2 litre 6 cylinder, common rail, electronic engine that is hooked to a Merc outdrive. Cummins and Mercuiser are in cahoot's together. Service oughta be good if you need it. what am i looking at as far as weight with the cummins? is it similar in hp to the 5.7 that i currently have? 300hp in the current motor...how much more efficant will the diesel be then the gas engine? will i be able to gain some speed with the diesel? i know alot depends on the prop but just wonder what the benifits will be if i do decide to swap from gas to diesel..thanks..

Mack Boring is the distributor in the northeast, they can refer you to a dealer in your area for Yanmars. The Yanmars are around 400lbs lighter per engine compared to a 6B cummins of at least 300hp.You better be in LOVE and planning on a long relationship with that boat if you decide to repower her.I dont know what the base price of a 6lp is nowadays, but 2 years ago right before the tier2 emissions came out my base engines were $24,000 each. This included everything needed to install them on your beds, gauge packages, isolators, elbow etc. Now I have no idea what a new outdrive will run you or the new pricing of the Yanmars. If the prices dont scare you off, make sure you have a complete survey done before you lay any money out, just to be sure you dont have any major structural problems.Just my .01

    repower

Big bucks for a small gain in mpg, probally no speed increase and more maint- yanmar and steyr-motors are def the lightest iron there is out there, but def not cheap, and as far as longevity time will tell if the modern high speed alum diesels spinning at over 4000 grand will hold up as well as the older iron blocks running 2800 and hardly stressed, and at 24' i doubt you need all that torque to get up on plane-

    why ???
do you have way too much disposable income ???

what year is the merc engine you have ???

if it's a newer engine, and it's propped correctly, you should be getting at least 2nmpg... you're not gonna pick up that much more...that's big money to drop...ol' "seapower" is on the money with that...big money to drop on that rig...

GettinWet, The engine I was talking about from Cummins/Mercruiser is not the 6BTA, it is the 4.2 litre. It is a whole different animal than the old 6B's. It weigh's less and has the newer injection system. I'm not trashing your boat here, but you did say a 1978 AirSlot, right? You are asking for a big price tag on your project. A long block or complete gas engine is expensive ,but no way near what you are thinking about undertaking here. Jimmy (JAWS) is telling you straight, mucho denaro !!! That being said I have an "old" boat myself that is not for sale ,that I pour money into because I like the boat and I plan on having it till I keel over. As far was what you will gain in performance I really can't venture to say that it would be worth the money you are going to spend, unless it was over a long period of time, with alot of fuel usage. The biggest advantage I see is your "exsplosion factor" will be way less with diesel. Frank,SeaPower

i really appreciate the responces....what it is...is what it is i guess..the current engine is probably 5 years old...i was basicly looking for more range.. i currently hold aprox 110 to 120 gallons of fuel...i guess in order to reach out to some of the farther spots"19 fathom lump, lobster claw" type areas i'm just going to have to bring some extra fuel tanks or just be prepared to chunk cause thats at my limmit as for range....i figured if i did a ghange over to diesel i would see some major increase in range vs what i can do now....my father has the same exact boat as i do right now a 78 24 airslot...his is powered with a 6cly volvo diesel..somewhere in the 180hp range...we hope to have her in the water next season and see what kind of numbers we get out of her...took her for a test run and topped out and 25-26mph...not sure of the fuel burn cause we didn't run her to long.....i would thionk it would be WAY more efficent to run then my gas engine....was hoping to have possible canyon range with it....but i know have to pick my days....

    there's something i'm missing here...

    you're running a 5.7 mercruiser,yes ??
    gotta bravo II drive,yes ???
    carb'd engine ???
you don't have the range to run to the 19 from townsends inlet ???
before you drop about 22k for the engine-4 cylinder yanmar, ball park price, mabey, you should try and get your rig set up a little better."set up" being, get it wheeled correctly.
here's an example,i have a similar set up,5.7 merc mpi engine in my own rig, bravoI drive, this gets me better than 3nmpg because it's wheeled correctly.i carry 150g fuel,100g main and a 50 aux tank-most fuel i ever put in this rig was 101g-that was firing up at 1am,running to the 100line of the poormans and trolling all day, shut down the engine at around 8:30 that nite -that was before i "dialed it in" with the prop...same rig burns 45g out and back to the far end of the lobster claw-where i was fishin' last season...it's all in setting up the boat correctly-lots of guys overlook this.you're gonna get the local dock know it all squawking to,telling you what to do,blow that guy off and use a little common sense...

smaller boats, the diesel advantage is real slim,it's honestly not worth the expense of a diesel swap over...

like i said, you want to increase your range, first thing to do is get the boat wheeled correctly, this WILL increase your range...

if you've got questions about this, feel free to contact me,i'll explain exactly how to do and what to do about it.
