    Question Aluminum Paint

I think I made the mistake of removing the aluminum hatch from my cabin entryway because the paint was chipping away in different places. I spent a couple of hours removing the paint (and still have about another hours worth of work to do) and figured I would just shoot it with Rustolium.

A buddy dropped by and said the Rustolium wouldn't work (paint would flack off) and that I needed to have it painted with a special powder paint. He figured it'd run me a couple hundred dollars over in Norfolk. Can this be done at any autobody shop or is there another paint especially made for painting aluminum?

Thanks ahead of time for any responses.

S&S does Powder coating. If I had an oven big enough to cure it I could powder coat it for you. Maybe Formula will chime in but I think to use regular paint on aluminum you have to acid etch it first so the paint will stick.

Dave, Regular Epoxy or Laquer paint won't stick well to non- ferrous metals. BUT, you can prime the metal with a primer for Alum and the use regular paint on top of the primer. ( go a couple or three coats of primer and sand). Any marine store will have spray cans of Alum primer for about $10/ can. A lot cheaper than powder coating but the powder coating sure is pretty.

    Talking Thanks

Darren I can't get my fiberglass door off because it's rivited into the hatchway. More hassel than I've already gotten myself into. From your response, I'm imagining that I would have to get the door off in order for the powder painting process to work and bake it onto the aluminum. Saw your boat picture, it too looks awesome!!

Glenn I much prefer to go your route. I was looking at the West Marine and Boaters World Catalogs last night, and each sort of alluded to this option. I'm off to one of the stores later today.

Thanks again guys for the tips.
