I fish in Texas. Good fishing--one problem. The best fishing requires a ton of fuel. For marlin, you generally have to run out 70-80 miles, then put out the lines. The best rigs are 150-200nm out. Not something you can just run and "go do". Rarelly are the seas less than 3-4 until july and august, so unless you have a big boat or just love a pounding, you have to want for a "window" 10 months of the year. I would love to see the new IPS system in a 61 garlington. I think you would have the best of both worlds. Great range, speed, and sea keeping ability along with the positioning system to "park" at the rig and get some rest without some one pulling the all night drive shift.
I fish in New England where a ton of fuel is a given. Running a buck to a buck and a quarter is the norm up here.
Most of the boats up here that fish that water consistently, are built so they don't pound in 3 to 4's.
I for one don't think IPS is the end all be all.
Stuffing 3 to 4 engines under a cockpit and pushing those units to the limits in my opinion is better off on someone elses boat.
If you can't afford to run a conventional shafted 61 Garlington then a 30% fuel saving doesn't mean squat
I've seen a few builders lead down the yellow brick road of the IPS, but I've yet to see one convert entirely to that system.
Why you ask? Because longevity is unproven.
I love the fact that some sportfish boat builders finally figured out that blowing exhaust out of the pods and into the wake doesn't make for a clean wake.
I'm waiting for someone other than a boat builder to convince me that the underwater noise of the pods isn't a deterrent to fish.
I don't think a 61' Garlington has been built for a few years...wonder why? I got no clue...as most anyone rave's about the boat.
Ive' been on quite a few here locally as were lookin' and hard...seems to me most that own em' love em'...
Garlington 61' with IPS...seems remote at best..just my .02$..
Love the Garlington...only drawback to me is the height in the engine room, yet I realize the center of gravity that makes it the boat it is...
A much prettier sixty footer in my opinion..
Couldnt agree more scattered grass! While all of the Garlington's are pretty machines Ritchie's boats just do it for me. I was in Hatteras this summer and went to Wanchese to visit the boat yards and got to meet him. He took the time to show us around and talk to us about the builds he had.

Look, I can't even afford to dream about a Garlington, much less own one, but, Yachtworld did a article on the Patricia a few years ago and I've been in love ever since. Such a sweet ride...
Viking 64' w/ 2400 MTU's. Cruises around 34knts.
2100 gallons of fuel gives you wayyy more range than you need. Fished one of these a few times. I don't remeber what capt said with fuel burn but when you throttle down to 27knts range increases a bit.
IPS hasn't stood the test of time yet. Let everyone else figure out the problems and profect it.
I'd buy that canyon runner boat over the garlington also
Well Thank you ... we love her as much after three seasons as we did when we took her out of Wanchese for the first time. The next two 60's coming out of Ritchies are really going to be beautiful. The Blue Runner is on schedule to splash this spring and will have the C18 Acerts with shaft tubes .. I am anxious to see how much improvement there is in speed over our power package .. I think 34kt cruise is realistic at 75gph. The other 60 under construction will splash later this year and has C32's ...Next up is a 54 with Cat power and ZF pods
