Throughout history, hurricanes and tropical storms have ranked among the most costly natural disasters in the United States.

Since 1980, there has been a total of 29 hurricanes and tropical storms that have caused damage of a billion dollars or more in the lower 48 states.

In the last eight years, the United States has been struck by five of the six most costly hurricanes in history according to data from the National Hurricane Center. Most of these were from the devastating 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, however we have a newcomer to the list as well.
