Lee,
when you put in the cutlass bearing you leave at least two inches sticking out ahead of the strut. In our case, we could only find an eight inch bearing and the strut was eight inches so we took two five inch shots and pressed them in. You then take and split the tube in half two inches and then cut half of it off where it goes over the bearing itself. All you do is take some fiberglass tape and make a couple of wraps around the half you cut off, that way when you need to change bearings all you do is cut or grind off the tape and take off the half you cut and pull the tube off. On the forward end you drill and tap the tube and put a set screw in it to hold the bearing in place and just remove those when you need to change that one. Hope you could follow what I was trying to tell you, I'll take some pictures next week and get them up to help illustrate it a little more. Take care, Troy |

Shaft Tube
Troy,
What purpose does the shaft tube serve? I've never seen this done and I'm curious about the purpose of it. Any more pictures of the progress? Mike |

Shaft tubes help reduce drag, and when filled with oil, can reduce the amount of noise under the boat to help out raising those pointy nose critters off shore.

I can understand the possible noise reduction as a result of the oil providing a dampening effect, but wouldn't the drag be increased as a result of the tubes being larger than the shafts? Does this truly work or is it the equivalent of painting squid on the bottom of you boat? ![]() |

magnus effect
Water swirling around the shaft is equal to about four times the shaft diameter in drag. this I believe is called magnus effect (not shure if the spelling is correct) also cleans the water flow to the prop. What I don't understand is how to you keep oil in the tube and feed water to the cutlas bearing. Every other set up like this i've seen uses a water fed packing gland and or an opening in the forward area of tube to scoop water into the tube. Should be good for at least two knots or better. One serious draw back is stagnant water laying around the shaft promotes corrosion. I wonder how Mark is doing with the ladies?

I just don't see how the cutless bearings are going to get cooled without water being forced from the front of the bearing. In your last post about a hole being notched at the top of the tube for cooling,I can see that.Pictures Please.

Thats funny Hubris !!!
Sorry for the lack of updates folks, we started our Winter fishing in Dec.and i have been in Va. Beach all winter chasing Stripers. The boat turned out well and performs really good. thanks for jumping in and answering the questions on the shaft tubes guys. The boat is up at Rudee inlet in Va. Beach where the owner lives but he will be in Hatteras for the Spring season for a couple of months. Let me know when you come down and I'll see if we can find her somewhere. I have been Striper fishing out of Rudee inlet all Winter and haven't seen much of the old Fish Skipper but I can't wait to see him and get my shirt !!! Thanks. Here is a picture I took of her right after she went in the water in Jan. Last edited by Capt.Troy Crane; 02-13-2008 at 09:00 PM. |

Capt. Troy,
Have you noticed a difference in speed with the shaft tubes? Or did you repower (than it would be too hard to guess) |
