Question Is 500 hrs. alot?? on twin Yamaha 225 Saltwater Series engines?

Hey, I'm looking at a boat that has twin 225 Yamaha Saltwater series engines. They have 500 hours on them and they are 1997 engines. I'm thinking I could get a few seasons out of them and then I could still afford to repower if I had to. is that a wrong way to think? The compression is good and the engines appear to run fine. I think i'm going to have a mechanic come look at them. Is there anything I should watch out for? Are there ways that people could hide the true condition of the engines? and if so, how will I be able to tell? thanks, tight lines! -tags11

Great engines... No thats not a lot of hours... Especially for Yamaha. I have 5000 almost on my little boat's 115... Compression is good, the motor is good. Basically. The one thing that can go on them when they get old is the main bearing. Still they have rph powerheads for them with warranty for dirt cheap...

I have a bud with the ox66 with bored power heads, either 250 or larger and they run hard everyday......vro was the cause of the the rebore or lack of vro, so now he mixes in the tank and all is great......they scream on his cc.....the head work was way cheaper than new fancy motors @13,000 a piece

Heard great things about the ox66 only negative I have heard is they drink gas. Now I have a supplemental question. What does everyone think about the HPDI.

I have twin 1999 yamaha 225's on my boat with 1100 hours. They had 250 hours on them when I bought them in 03. The first year I ran quicksilver oil and wasn't using the carbon free additive and the oxygen (o2) censors went out on me 2 times. It is a very common problem with these motors. They are about $300 each but you can try to take the bad ones out and scrape and clean them with brake cleaner and sometimes they will work fine. Since the first year, I only run Yamaha oil and use the Yamaha carbon free additive and haven't had any problems at all. I was planning on repowering after my warranty ran out but they run so damn good I am going to hold out as long as I can. I'm hoping I get 2000hrs or more. At 3300 rpm's I burn 29gals /hr @ 31kts. and at 5000 rpm's I burn 50gals /hr @ 48kts.

    excellent choice....

    500hrs??? that's nothing....i have a customer who has 1985 yam 150's-these have 3,500 hrs....those engines will run a loooooooooong time...
hpdi's and ox66 engines, both have oxygen sensors, these can and will cause a powerhead failure if they go bad...what causes their demise,is simple, cheap oil or improper winterization....
disconnecting oil injection????why??? the yamaha as well as the merc systems are the most trouble free systems-i don't recall the last time i seen a problem with the oil injection system....
