to whoever it may concern,
stay away from these boats! i dont ever want to see anyone else end up with the sad reality that the myth of a buddy davis might scare you away from boats forever. beyond the misfortunes of people who got sucked in, the 47 is probably the worst model of a name that went bankrupt every other year for the past two decades (more than u.s air which is impressive) without a doubt his legacy of boat building has amazed me my whole life because no matter how nice of a boat you are on or where you are somebody will ask you if it is a buddy davis!
i can honestly say the 47 model is without a doubt probably the only thing more over-rated than the whole line itself. it's a fuel-pig in any sea, scary down sea, and has just enough cockpit space for a starving midget who better own some knee pads. if you plan on going further than west end from palm beach you better carry some extra fuel and you better rent something to put it on or you wont have enough room for your crew.
i don't want to offend an owner but unless you haven't ever been on anything else even they can't honestly disagree. there are no deals in boating and i can assure you whoever has got one for sale isn't because they love it it's because nobody took the deal in the last ten years it's been for sale! look at anything and everything else before you make this decision and if you don't believe me, ask anybody who has worked on one that has worked on anything (from any other builder) and make sure you are not to eager to hear their answer so they can be honest.
i am posting this because i don't want to see anyone else get sucked into the legend that never was! the truth hurts but there might be a reason this franchise went broke at every turn.
Now that is some honest feedback, the kind that viewers need to incorporate when making their buying decisions.
Owners should not take it personally, especially those who have not had a chance to run other makes and models. That gets me to my experience with our 46 Post (since sold). I know there are Post followers out there, and it is probably like Mustang/Camaro loyalties, but that 46 Post was so over rated, I couldn't believe it. Except for a Head Sea, it was a p-i-g, wet, rolly and forget about down sea running unless you wanted to swap ends with your transom. Engine room was a flat out disaster in layout and access.
But this leads to a more interesting question, which 46-47' Flybridge Production Sportfisher stands out amongst the rest?
A 46 Bert is a nice start, it will roll you to death in a trough but get you home when it counts.![]()
rides great, lots of storage . fish boxes, storage for days, great bridge and warranties on engines still,,, newer boats but great hulls... the 47' davis was a labor of love and will be if you own one.. the riverea is a clorox bottle .. rinse and shammy.... go fishing..
having spent 20 plus years on a 46 post i have to disagree about the head sea ride- it is wet there too
Every boat is a compromise. My father's post is put together well, but rides bad in a head sea. We repowered her in 04 and the change in weight distribution improved the following sea ride considerably. She fishes awesome (like most other flat bottom boats).
Bertrams ride good in a head sea, but suck the fuel pumps dry and leave something to be desired as far as putting plywood bulkheads in a FRP boat (on the older boats).
Hatteras has a great reputation, but i still fail to see why- built very well, but laid out poorly. Wet in most directions and not very fuel efficient.
Viking is probably the best production boat out there, but doesn't ride that great in some directions. if you want the perfect production boat, have hatteras build you a viking.
Most of the carolina builders leave something to be desired as far as wiring and attention to ABYC rec's but I am a fan in most cases. Although quatering sea chine slap is a problem.
And some of the cold molded builders rely too heavily on the chemical bond in the build process (yes it is stronger than a mechanical bond, but you need a good mechanical bond to secure the chemical bond inthe first place).
Its funny, people will bash ocean, luhrs, brand x, whatever, but it is a lot like taste in women. I have Ocean owners that love them to death, same with luhrs- it all depends on the application.
There is no such thing as a perfect boat.
BTW Blaine- tell us how you really feel- I have read all 6 of your posts, and it seems like you have a problem beating around the bush and try to be too politcally correct![]()
47 is very scary in a following sea, no matter what you do with the trim or throttles.
"if you want the perfect production boat, have hatteras build you a viking".
I love that quote.
