NC 4-Stroke Engine Oil?

I have the Suzuki 140 hp 4-stroke. If the 4-Stroke outboard is basically like a car engine can the same engine oil be used? Just wondering since the Suzuki dealer is selling engine oil at $6.00 a quart. Love that engine after running an old Johnson 200hp 2-stroke.

Its not the same .Run the oil that your manufacturer recomends.Outboards are under much more of a load than an automobile and they are used in a highly corosive environment with a lot of mosture.

I work for a company that sells/repairs outboards and it is strongly recomended by the manufacturer to use their oil.. it is not only because they want you to buy their oil, it is because they have special additives and viscosity for their engines... We do not use a generic oil for all the engines we only use the oils that the manufacturer requires for the engine.

If its $6.00 per quart for the syn oil then thats a good deal. You want to use that oil. Like stated above a outboard runs cooler then a car. Thus more moisture can build. Also the 140 suzuki runs over 6,000 RPM. That is alot of wear and tear. Try and run a car at 6,000 rpm for a few hours and see how long it last. Your only changing it once a year so go with the good stuff.
