    3M HIGH GLOSS GELCOAT COMPOUND

starting to compound 1982 boat with power buffer, my question is after compounding is it normal to have compound residue left on hull that have to wipe off or should it completely buff or compound away like wax? after wiping off residue leaves a good shine . doesnt seem like it would buff away to a shine cause the pad stays pretty gummy with compound. the compound doesnt seem to dry like wax. just wondering if im getting best results i can thanks for any input. Compound will dry out, but it sounds like you need to clean your pad more frequently. Once the pad gums up, it will not clean the boat as well. There is a special tool made to clean the pad, but I find that a clean block of wood works as well - just touch the spinning pad to the block and the gunk should come off.

Alternately you can keep a spare pad, once it gums up, swap it out...

Just did my boat last weekend.

I use the spurs quite often when compounding.

Take a look at the video.... http://www.ehow.com/video_4426603_us...g-machine.html

When I compound I use the 3M finesse it and there always seems to be a little left on the fiberglass that I just wipe away with a dry rag.

Have fun.... my arms are still sore from Sat and Sun.
