hey hass,
looks like an early davis , is it cold molded plywood or glass? i worked for buddy in the late 80's thru mid 90's and the first 38 hull was cold molded as was the first 44 hull. the first three 38's were an express , a open bulkhead dayboat and a flybridge convertable . i was powered by cummins 400's. two and three were volvo 74tamd's. the rest were with detroit 671's. we built several 38's that went to overseas clients and they were 671 powered also.
buddy in the early days cold molded the first hull then faired the crap out of it then flipped it and layed up a mold off of it. thats the 38, 44 , 47 , 61 the latter 58 and the 74. i know because i spent 2 weeks inside the 74 hull as did all in the plant! anyway if the boat pictured is had for agood price go for it! the 38's were wet because the forward sections were made full for accomadation space. the 44' buddy designed off the 47 figuring if deep entry on 47 is good , deeper on 44 is better, wrong. the 44 was a really good head to boat but a bit squirrelly in a following quarter sea .needs more power. by the way if the 37 doesnt work out let me know as im a boat builder, thanks and good luck.
Cast Bronze is in Brielle Y.C. Its a 37Davis...pretty boat.
Hi Guys,
I have a 1993 38 Davis (you can see pic in avatar). I spoke with Davey Jones who previously worked at Davis and he gave me the background. My boat is the dayboat design with the open bulkhead. It was the first 38' of 6 I believe and is cold-molded.... the others were molded off mine and were glass. With the pulpit it measures 40' and has 671's. She is fairly heavy for her size and is not a speed-demon. I can cruise at 22 knots which is good enough for our application... although repowered with some Cummins at approx. 600hp she would fly!She can be a bit wet in sloppy seas but can handle the crap very well and is a great fishing platform. We have had her out in some truly nasty conditions and she has held her own with 50 footers.
The Tall ship race left Bermuda yesterday and we accompanied the ships down the island as they left and I have attached some pics of the boat.
Cheers
love those lines and tumblehome on a 38footer! gorgeous boat.
gorgeous boat, i love a davis
Otoro,
The Russian Tall ship in the background of your picture pulled into port yesterday with a broken mast..they ran into a huge storm crossing to Charleston.
yes, 2 of the other ships had to return to Bermuda as well due to problems. One of them with another broken mast issue. The weather has been nasty for the last week so the crossing could not have been too pleasant.
Also, the Marion to Bermuda sailing race was due to get in this week too but a load of the boats withdrew due to conditions. A friend of mine just got in last night and I think he has Post-traumatic stress syndrome!!! They couldnt eat for the last 3 days because it was too rough.
Hi from Fiji!!
Whats the specs on the 38 Davis? Lovely lines!!
