I've had some experience with them. Feel free to visit my website: http://www.catdefect.com-a.googlepages.com/home
If you don't learn everything you need to know from the site, feel free to ask. I'd be happy to send you a copy of my latest seven page letter to Caterpillar detailing the problems with my engine and problems that affect 3196 engines in general.

Jim,
If you get serious about the boat, let me know and I'll get you in touch with somebody local, call or e-mail me.

Hi Storm
Can an aftermarket (genaric) aftercooler be put on 3196.
I don't know of any specifically but there are heat exchanger companies that may have something that could be used for a aftercooler.
why would you buy a boat with engines that have had so many problems. Class action law suit. google it. If you like the boat price in a re power.

If you are serious about buying this package, I would; a) review past engine oil analysis and work history, b) inspect engine for broken motor mounts which is a common result of 3196 engine vibration, c) check to see if the aftercooler has the latest updates - the latest version is 216-5147 rev. 3.
Upon purchase, I would; a) remove, inspect, and pressure test aftercooler and replace o-rings, b) be prepared to spend considerable time and expense removing, overhauling, and replacing the engine - don't allow yourself to believe this isn't going to happen, c) research accessibility issues for engine removal and replacement - what part of the boat might need to be cut away to allow crane access, d) research suitable engine replacement options given the existing engine footprint and clearance issues. Few engines in the same horsepower range share a similar low profile.
Finally, be informed that it's my personal choice, not my obligation, to save the world from making the same stupid and uninformed decision I made when I decided to purchase a Caterpillar engine.

Thanks Storm....my offer was refused so probably wont be dealing with 3196's. Sucks cause I really like the boat and for the right number it was worth repowering it....she would smoke with QSM 11
Sounds to me like somebody did you a really big favor when they refused your offer. Maybe you'll get lucky and find one with a decent engine.

I was a marine service tech for CAT for four years and have rebuilt a lot of 3196. there is nothing wrong with this engine it did have some problems and 99% of the problems were caused by the aftercooler. Cat tryed to lighten the aftercooler and by doing this took away it strength. They have fixed the problem and aslong as the engine has generation three aftercoolers in it you will not have a problem. I dont care what anyone says the engine it self is fine it did get a bad name from the failures it had but a lot of people probaly dont know that the 3196 is still outthere it now just has a new name as C12 it is the same engine if you have questions please call at 443-233-3940 I will be happy to answer any questions you have.
