30 ft Downeast lobster boat with an outboard
To most this will sound nuts but they don't call us Mainiacs for nothing!I am in the process of buying a 30 ft. Southshore,I want to put a Yamaha 350 on the stern,we have been debating over where to cut the keel.If we take off to much the boat will probably slip in the waves not enough trouble with bad water to the prop, there has to be a happy medium so any input from anyone on the forum would be appreciated.I have been using 4 stroke outboards since 1998,I have owned diesel powered boats, big power gas engines & I would take the outboard over any configuration that I have owned.Outboards are probably not the choice of many but they are becoming popular with many fisherman, even commercial.

its deff possible, check out this thread, pretty good info. I would think there would be a need for lifting strake if you want it to plane.

You'll need to check with Yamaha about the 4 bladed props they have been working on for the 350 to push her. Good Luck!

Women love me... fish fear me
Couldnt you go with twins and leave the keel?

I want to try & stay with a single engine,I know that the keel is important & I hate to cut off to much it will be a pain to put it back.Northern bay was going to build a 30 ft outboard but the economy put a stop to that.I have talked to Ken at Flower's boatworks,he is actually going to do the work & he thinks we start cutting at where the stern post would be & cut at about a 30 degree angle,if that doesn't work cut more off.I know people might think it would be easier to just go buy a vee bottom boat & be done with it but I have owned downeast boats all my life pretty hard to beat them in bad weather & I have had great luck with 4 stroke outboards, time will tell!I will post more pics when we begin.

Stop staring at my Avatar.
How'd you happen to get pics of Pete's Southshore?

Ken Flowers has the mold now, still going.I almost bought a kit from Peter back in 1993 before I bought a Webbers cove, wish I had bought the 30 ft.!I can't wait to get the kit home to get going on it.I plan on lobstering plus I want to try my luck with some groundfish, maybe even the elusive BFT!Last season we had the tuna in the bay but didn't even try,to busy banding lobster!I think it is going to work fine with an outboard just want to get the keel right.

Interesting concept ,I used to own a SS 30 with a 260 cummins 6bta and would have not changed a thing other than fuel cell placement and better spray rails
she was perfectly balanced and 4-6 GPH at 18-20 knots
As far as the keel goes occasionaly she would grab and keel walk . not being a marine architect I would not try giving any advice on what she needs or not needs for stability
these vessels were originally designed for gas engines
I wil try to scan an original brochure that i found in my travels
Best of Luck with your transformation if you proceed .

Thanks for the input,I appreciate any info I can get.I know the boat performs well with diesel but I am hoping that the 350 will work as well,it better for the price of them!Of all the hulls Calvin designed I always liked the 30 ft the best,I only hope we can do it justice when we make an outboard boat out of it.By November when we get 15 to 25 kt. NW(add the 15 to the 25,more accurate)& we are on long warps I will know for sure if we got it right.
