28 bertram refit project (VERY COOL)

http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi..._id=75943&url=

Anyone see this on Yacht World? Look at the pics - very cool build out. While boating is expensive, I question whether this is a $360K job???

Hypothetically speaking, if you already owned the boat, any thoughts on what this project would cost assuming an outfitting with 250-350HP outboards and gas genny?

Well for one that is a beautiful boat, i love the color and what they did. I am redoing a similar boat a 29 phoenix, stripped hull and bottom, putting underwater lights painting all that plus hard top and new gps center rigger, all with me doing my own work probably less then 20k when completed but thats not including the motors i want...lol

With similar job just adding outboards i would say 45-80k depending....

its nice but at that price it probably wont sell. if i had 280k to blow on a boat i wouldnt get that one. i would be talking to someone who builds those sick custom carolina boats or just find a used one on the same website. the owner of that boat might as well just use it b/c it aint gonna sell at that price. just my .02

You end up about $95 finished

if you build one though the 230's are all you need even down to 140 volvos to cummins diesels... sad part your back to slower and gear in the water compared to outboards.

He completely redid everything on that boat, changed the cabin, even as much putting a custom bench in there. He redid the entire transom by adding in those live wells, replaced the entire cockpit, and glassed in the front windows. If he payed someone else to do it he easily could have spent that much and if so he will own that boat forever.

I'm actually in the process of converting a old 28 Bertram to outboards, as far as the cost I'll let you know when I get there. Hoping its not going to be over 15k. (Already have the boat and engines)

Cocobum, Questsportfishing is pretty much the man when it comes to putting outboards on a 28' Bert. Hes done it already I think more than one but Im not sure of the number. If you got questions hes the one to ask, and he does some pretty work hes got pictures in another thread here.

as for the expensive boat...

all he did was make it so you can't see out, the seat / bench is way too low (you cant see out the back or forward and there is no storage built in... so basically no couch fishing or looking at your girl or guests in the face..) the inside looks as if all they did was paint it.., the yanmars are a great engine *but the outboards out perform and fuel to weight to ride greatly increases with outboards... (did I mention there is no gas or oil in the bilge ever again???) , it has no seating left on the bridge for people, it has no bow rails..(the bertram bows are great to hang out on!!) it has funky lighting and way too white, battery control shut off switches are back under the step in a wet location, the top is mounted to where the whole flybridge some day will take off and get loose, the thing STILL has a engine box step up .. the price is way above what anyone in 2009 should have in a rebuilt boat.. put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig... right??? if you go outboards ...at least get your happy lil butt down here and see what i do and it will save you headaches / grief and the $ you will spend on a small vacation will be well worth it. You need to keep all the storage you can and use all the space you can on whatever you build and go smart. I would not trade bow rails any day. I have cut my deck down and will be posting pics soon. it did come out great. be smart whatever you do on a boat you can save money and time getting what you want if you try. our boat has 225 four strokes we fish / dive / have dinner parties on our boat and we use it. hold 230 fuel 42 water and 4 batteries and storage for days. by the way a vacu flush toilet in a small boat takes up space and is expensive a raritain is 1/4 the price and easy.. build smart. by the way with outboards you get rid of the air vents!!! thats well worth buying outboards not to fillet your shins going to the bow!

For 300K, you could fair out the old hull, polish it to a class A finish, pop a production quality mold off and bulid 5 new boats (minus engines)...
