I own a 1997 25' Classic that had a KAD42 engine & the engine was nothing but trouble after 1000 operating hours. Part of the problem was the boat with the 42 series was underpowered. I know the 44 you've got has a bit more power. As was said in another post your compressor (supercharger) should not kick in before 17-1800 rpm. At any rate, I repowered the boat about a year ago with a 315 horse Yanmar & the performance difference between my old Volvo & this engine is remarkable (cruises easily at 26 knots, WOT is 31+ knots). Your hull is rock solid & I hope you don't run into any trouble like I experienced with my Volvo engine.

thanks for the replies, my compressor does kick in at 1800rpm,which in a head sea is between 7 to 9 knots. i feel this hull could use more power. half fuel fluke fishing 2 guys no problem. feels super heavy for offshore runs.i love the boat just wish it had a kad300or315 yanmar.maybe repower in in a few years.is that yanmar hooked to a volvo or merc outdrive. i'm running c4 stainless props and getting 3900wot. this is a great site.

i have a 2003 with the 8.1 crusader I know its not a diesel but I love the 385hp i used to run a 99' with the 7.4 315hp the 8.1 is a huge difference. My 2003 is topping out around 42kts the other day with just 2 guys and 1/2 tank of gas. Of course I don;t drive them for their speed I drive them for the wieght and offshore realiability

Capt Stu,
When you repowered, did you keep the Volvo DP drive or did you change to the Bravo 4? |

I kept the Volvo DuoProp. I had heard of problems with the Yanmar/Bravo combination & wanted to stay away from that. I now have over 300 operating hours on my repower (done by Layton's Custom Boatworks) & am very pleased.

If you repower you can keep the Volvo outdrive and not need to swap gears. I think you do need a little prop work, but not much. I have the 315 coupled to Merc BravoIIIXD. It's blown up on me once, but insurance called it an underwater collision and footed the bill. 900 hours on the engine and 300 on the rebuilt outdrive and she's good so far.
As far as popping injectors, Yanmar suggests it after the 1st 500 hours and then every 1,000. If you're mechanically inclined you can do it yourself, if not it's about 4 hours labor charged to pull them and another 4 hours to reinstall them. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to pull them and a little over 2 hours to put them back in. The local shop here tested mine for $12.50 each, rebulit the seals and tips for $28.00 each, which will need doing everytime they are pulled if they have any hours on them. A new injector for the Yanmar runs about $280.
