You should be able to get many hours out of it, over 2000 I would think. It seems that you will need to change the timing chain about 1000 hrs. Other than that, change oil and lower unit oil about every 100 hours depending on how hard you run it. Yamaha has a great forum that should give you a lot of info on that motor...

Yamaha 4 strokes - in general
I've got a friend who live bait fishes and ran his 250 4 stroke to 3000 hours! Basic maintenece - I'm going to find out if he had to do anything major other than the timing belt - I don't think so but will check. He just replaced this engine with...another Yamaha 250 stroke (duh - no brainer there), not the new 4.2 block but I know he got a good deal on it.
We've got a 2005 115 on our 20' Pathfinder with...110 hours!. Not enough use but it cranks and runs like a sewing machine every time. Our only issue has been a sticky tilt motor (probably from lack of use).
When the 4 strokes first came out we were concerned about that valve train on top of the engine. Eight years later (the first 225 4 stroke came out in 2002) It doesn't seem to be a problem.
Of course if anyone has had problems it would be good to know - Good Luck with yours -
