    2000 Wellcraft Coastal 230 thoughts

    Looking at purchasing a used 2000 Wellcraft Coastal 230 with a 225 low hours Honda 4 stroke,plus trailer.Asking price is $20k.
I am not overly familiar with Wellcraft boats other than I understand the dry weight is heavy (5000 lbs) which is heavier (500 lbs) than an 23'GW Gulfstream.
Does anyone know if this boat is underpowered for my off shore needs and I am not a Honda guy as all my prevoius boats have been i/o's.

    Thanks in advance

I am not sure on the price I would have to look but I think overall it looks to be a great deal . The honda 4-stroke engines you can't go wrong with them great motor!

The wellcraft again depending on the boats actual history is a awesome boat.

I am a big fan of the high end center consoles and wellcraft is on the higher end of center consoles

Honestly you can not go wrong by any means

Be sure to get a survey and compression check on the motors

Best of luck with your purchase!

    Thanks LADYLUCK

I have a call into the seller asking for the 4 stroke maintenance history and from there I will be hiring a boat surveyor to do a complete survey.
I am not local to where this boat is being sold so due dilegence is in order.

    Thanks again for your response.

Depending on how hard it has been run, I have seen some of the older WC's have floor liner seperation from the stringer grid. But saying that the 2 I have seen it in were the bigger CC's, 30ft. plus and have taken some pretty hard poundings in King Mack tourney's.

I'll second the Honda, great motors!

i can give you my opinion, after woking on a few of these boats-you may not like this...

the build quality is among the worst,i've seen-these hulls are common to have voids,a well as stress cracks-granted,stress cracking and voids are a common thing on boats, however, these boats are among the worst,i've ever seen.the materials used, are of the cheapest quality-"materals" being, hardware, and fixtures.access to ship's systems in certain cases,is impossible-example-the fuel and vent hose-on that model,it's just about impossible, without cutting the deck-and at 10yrs old-it's about time for replacement...the electrical systems are just as poorly constructed.
i've seen a few of these boats, with a seperation problem-hull and deck.the hull and deck were actally seperated-due to poor tecniques used to bond the hull and deck-behind the rub rail - in a few cases, there was no caulking in the hull to deck joint...search my posts-you will find a thread,of a fuel tank replacement-on a similar boat-wellcraft coastal-it will show you a few things you may not want to see...
pesonally,i would run, based upon what i have seen...

    Thanks Jawz12 for your comments

A friend of mine who is a professional guide had the same boat and when I asked him for his views he stated exactly what you said.Hull-deck separation and the fuel line replacement in particular. He still indicated this was a solid deal.

Thanks for your advice as I am thinking of shying away from this boat and looking more towards a same year 22' Grady White Seafarer with a 250 Suzuki.$10k more though.May just keep shopping for the perfect boat.

    Thanks again

Well ,I am going to sea trial a 2007 Wellcraft 232 Coastal tomorrow.Has a F250 4 stroke Yammy and seems from a distance to be in prime condition.Wants $32k. Boat is located in Nanaimo BC Canada which is a short distance from Vancouver where I leave. Hope all goes well and boat meets my expectations.Everything will depend on inspection survey that will be arranged early next week as a percaution.
