1997 31' blackfin info needed
Any one have any info they can share on a 1997 31' blackfin. I am thinking about buying one and I never been on one. How do they run in big seas? Are there anything I should look for when buying. Thanks

Biggest little sportfisherman ever made
The 31 blackfin is the same boat as the 31 Northcoast which was designed by charles jannace (who designed most of the popular blackfin hulls too) Jannace left blackfin in the 80's and started Northcoast. Blackfin bought the molds from Northcoast in 1992 and actually lightened the boat up a little - Northcoast had 1-3/4 inch thick bottoms. This hull is the deepest vee of any twin diesel production boat ever made. It has a variable deadrise bottom - meaning unlike a 31 betram (same vee throughout) the deadrise towards the bow and middle of the boat is alot sharper than the deadrise at the stern. I think at the stern it is 25 degrees and goes to 60 something at the bow. This is more synonomous with a carolina style bottom. Think of it as a carolina bottom with blackfin chines.
It is a huge boat for a 31 footer becuase it has a 12 foot beam too. If you didnt know it and just saw the bow of the boat and didnt get a view of the whole boat you would think it could be a 45 footer. Because of this the boat feels and rides much bigger than 31. Too give you a comparison the 31 bertram weighs about 8,000 to 10,000 depending on power (and it is a bridge boat). The 31 northcoast with diesels weighs about 18,000 and the blackfin comes in around 17,000. Because of the weight and the vee the ride in a head sea is unparrelled unless you compare it to a carolina boat. You would think that on the drift the boat would rock becasue of the deepness of the vee but in reality it was one of the best drifting boats I was ever on. This is because of the exaturated reverse chines most blackfins and all northcoasts have. Anyway if you are interested in the blackfin version make sure you get the version where the rudders are on the transom. Blackfin made a couple 31's with the rudders underneath and the boat did not get the same speed becasue the hull was originally designed for transom rudders. the Transom rudders provided more lift to get the ass out of the water. (I had a detailed discussion with Jannace about this) Last edited by Mike15; 02-18-2008 at 01:26 PM. |

Yes sir I did. Started out taking up to 6 but then I limited it to 4 paying passengers....6 was just too many bodies.

Look at www.jannace.com/yachts for Charles Jannace's website. Nice guy and loves to talk about boats. As stated in one of the other replies he did most of the design work for Blackfin. The 31 was a Northcoast but I think he designed that too. If Charlie Jannace is in town he should email back to you.
Good luck. Anything built by Blackfin acts a lot bigger than it really is. I have a 29 flybridge w/ 270 Cummins and I love it. The billfish like it too!!!!!

Anthony,
Did you have a tower on yours? Without the tower the roll is considerably less. |
