    1988 24' North Coast

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a solid fishing boat and have been cosidering a late model Grady sailfish a 24' Rampage, 28' Bertram, and a 24' North Coast express w twin 220hp fwc inboards. I'm looking for feedback...don't know much about the North Coast but it looks solid.

    Thanks,
    Rodney

    well...
24 rampage, balsa cored hull-which means,if something was installed incorectly, the balsa core can sustain serious damage.ride on these, well, the name "slampage" is there for a reason...
grady sailfish, tough ride from these as well, check the hard top, odds are pretty good the welds are cracked and broken, that's not from metal termites,it's due to the wonderfull ride.these rigs are very well known for a host of problems, dry rotting of the stringers, deck, transom, and bulkheads.also well known for fuel system problems, read that as tank failures, terrible electrical system too...
    28 bertram,notta bad rig,fiberglass fuel tank,gotta come out,but,it's a bertram...deep v hull,means it's not gonna beat you to death,the the previous boats mentioned.
24 north coast.worked on a few of these.couldn't believe the weight the construction is top rate !!! hull is solid fiberglass,a little over an inch in the hull's bottom-got pictures of a north coast i removed thru hulls on the bottom from,i couldn't believe the way that rig was built !! nice !! deep v hull on this one too, means it's not gonna beat your head in like a slampage or a grady either...

    there ya go...

    Blackfin

    Rodney,

I can't honestly comment on a 31, but I did have a 1976 24' Blackfin Combi with twin Volvo diesels.

It wasn't the fastest boat out there, but it did have a lot of range and if you didn't mind getting a little wet you could run it in some pretty rough water. V-Hulls take a lot of power if you want to get out there fast which equates to a lot of fuel. Huge cockpit for such a small boat. Wish I still had it, if that says anything.

    Rodney:

I owned a 1989 27' Albemarle with straight gas 350 c.i.d.inboards since new. I sold it with over 1100 operating hours on her & feel qualified to comment on all aspects of that era's 27 footer. Let me know if you have any questions about one of that vintage.

that 24 Northcoast is a great little rig. the 31 Northcoast is the same hull as the 31 Blackfin Combi after a certain model year.....just don't know what the year was that Blackfin bought and started using that mold.

    27' Albemarle

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input, I'm going to sea trial a 29' Blackfin with twin yanmars today. However, I'm leaning twards the 27' Albemarle with twin Volvos (gas) that I looked at this past weekend. The albie is more in my price range and I've heard that they are an incredible ride in the rough stuff. Are they a dryer ride than the Blackfin?

    31 Northcoast / Blackfin

The last year that North Coast made the 31 was 1991. NC went Bankrupt and for a few months, Phoenix yachts made a few (i think 6). I have the pheonix version...its exactly the same. Blackfin bought the tooling the following year and made the 31 Combi with it.

The 31 NC is a fantastic boat for its size. a DEEP v (24degrees aft, 56 forward). For a deep V hull is rides very dry...if you are used to those carolina style boats with the wild flare, you might call the NC "wet". Head sea performance is the best i've experienced with any similar sized boats. MOST of the NCs were powered with gas engines though...a few with 250 HP cummins, which owuld be "barely enough HP". Mine has 3208T cats and we move along at 23Kts. The blackfins were a bit faster due to higer HP cat engine...mostly 3116, which was not Cat's best effort.

when comparing the 31 NC or BF to the albe and NC 24, keep in mid that they are arguable MUCHbigger boats that the difference in length might suggest. The 31 is probaly close to TWICE as heavy as the 24. The ride will feel MUCH "bigger"...and you'll have room for overnighting and generators etc.

if you go the 31 NC BF route, feel free to call or email: joseph.fanelli@ge.com

Blackfin bought the 31 in 1992...We have one of the last ones made by Northcoast - Its a 1991
