    Question 1970 Johnson 25R70E - Shifter Question

I just purchased a 12' Valco U-12 boat with a Johnson 25 HP 25R70E motor on it. Ran it out on the lake today for the first time to test things out. One thing I did notice is on the left (sitting in the boat looking at the motor) of the housing, there appears to be a missing shift handle or rod to put the motor into forward, neutral, and reverse. There is even a mounting spot it appears. I can still shift using the plastic handle, however I'm sure it would be easier is there was a handle of some sort.

Is there truly indeed suppose to be some sort of a lever or handle here, and if so, where can I pick up another?

Here is a pic of the left side:

Looks to me like its set up for controls. the cable casing would clip into the bracket and the end of the cable has spring loaded pin that goes into the diamond hole in shifter handle

Thanks for the quick response. I've found the gearshift handle on the below exploded parts view, however there doesn't appear to be anything connected to the gearshift handle or mention of the bracket.

I've got a repair manual on order, I'll see if it may explain further.

    Thanks again,

you would find the rest of it in exploded view for controls and cables. I actually think somewhere around the house i have a set of controls, cables and package of special ends that have the spring loaded pin I'm talking about. but I'm sure you will have to look in accessory view for parts list
