Mary,

One of the highlights of the tournament was Chuck taking the your boat up between us leaving Lynnhaven. Even got a little spray from you. That was a nice fish you had on yesterday. Look like a pretty good bend on the rod. Look forward to seeing all the pics.

Heard it was a little more than just spray It was funny we were creeping up to the bridge coming out and I fore warned the crew in the back of the boat to HOLD ON! I knew Chuck was about ready to get on it I knew that it was soon going to turn to a shot gun start once we cleared the markers.

And that fish

Here is a little press on the tournament

Outdoors notebook: Chesapeake man takes crown at Rudee Inlet event

VIRGINIA BEACH

Chesapeake captain Max King and a couple of his fishing buddies dominated the fifth annual Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout that concluded Saturday out of Rudee Inlet.

King won the event two years ago, finished fourth last year, and captained three teams during the three-day striper fishing tournament. His day-two team won with a three-fish combined weight of 137.4 pounds. Fred Jett of Reedville caught all three fish. He was joined by Emory, Vincent and Sam Haynie, also of Reedville; Brian and Mark Hartung of Chesapeake; and Steven Lang of Portsmouth.

They won a 21-foot Contender center console boat valued at $50,000, and $15,750 in cash.

The big cash winner was King's former American Striper Association partner David Nova of White Stone. His Marlin Maniac III team won $72,550 with 131.4 total pounds. The difference in winnings is because Nova's team paid into more entry levels. Nova also skippered the seventh place team - Marlin Maniac II, which won $21,860.

Third place went to Hapi Daze III, with 131.04 total pounds - good for $43,510.

The tournament paid out a total of $227,170 through seven places.

Day 1 was a slow start we started a little south of Wachapreague working the eels but slow, heard a report up on Wachapreague so we moved in up there to see what was happening. Everything was right plenty of bait, fish the whole the nine yards just couldn't pull anything substantial out of there.

Day 2 started at the dock by deciding that we were going to make the run to NC. Didn't make it any further south than SandBridge the bait was thinker than thick see sounder picture below and the fish were cookie cutters of 25 - 30lbs. Birds crashing and hook up after hook up

Day 3 started off to a good start Max boated a 30lb fish 1st thing. By 9:00we had our 1st chance at a fish my trinidad 20 started to scream and it was running harder than ever out of 30' of water. I started to make my way to the bow and it was still hauling ass, I yelled to the back to get the lines out of the water and lets go. 3/4 spooled and the adventure begins.

This is just plain out crazy stuff 9:16 mile mile and half later still on the fish and he is still going with me in tow, there was no lifting this fish, we would get on him and I would slightly get him up and he would take off all over again pulling harder and harder every time.

Now we were starting to run in to problems now we are coming in to boats drifting with floats. I am starting to panic just a bit. I told Chuck to GET ON IT and get on top of him to see if I could gain some sort of control of this fish before we got in to the mess of boats ahead. We did just so think we could of went a little faster but Chuck was afraid of line slack. I would of died before I slacked that line. Got up on him and NOPE NOT GOING TO HAVE IT he took off again.

Now this is just stupid so many thoughts are cruising thru my what the frick is it Mini Volkswagen, tire, big arse dog shark. Now I am worried we are wasting our time chasing this stupid fish when we could have gear in the water. But I was not about to give up NO WAY!

Not sure which Fountain it was but THANK YOU for pulling your floats in for me. It was much appreciated and I hope you understand where I was coming from I hope that everyone would as kind as these guys were to let us pass safely.

9:26 we cleared the Fountain and we were still on our way with a long battle ahead of us. Every time come up on him lift the rod and dead weight lift and crank a few times and SEE YA HE was GONE!

This whole saga continued on for a long time lift crank gain and lose over and over for 21 minutes of video till we finally had him stopped but still didn't want to come up but he was slowly coming and I knew time was critical due to be hooked up so long and anything can go wrong at this point.

Then the moment came when the rod went straight and the leader chaffed thru

I do not know what it was but what ever it was IT WAS BIG!! Could it of been a WORLD RECORD ROCKFISH? It's possible MAYBE A BLUEFIN??? Anything is possible all I know its it was dead weight and a lot of power behind this fish and one upset angler on the other end. I don't lose fish I can count 3 in the past few years and when it happens its not a pretty moment but it is what keeps us in the game of fishing.

In talking to a few people it is amazing how much luck is involved with fishing. Anglers and captains can be prepared with all the right gear, time, tides and fishing knowledge but it all comes down to being in the right spot at the right time.

To the Sandfiddler Road house crew of 26 Fountain team members, plus 2 outsiders IT WAS A BLAST staying with you all. Robbie and Kitchen staff crew the food was EXCELLENT and Thank you all so much the house was awesome and so where the people. Maybe next time we can get 2 houses one for the Tenders and one for the Tains

Great seeing and meeting some new faces and looking forward to seeing some new teams on the trail.

Till next time and may the big one never get away from you!

Here is what we are all chasing besides a good time with fishing and friends
