Spot Satellite GPS/Messaging Handheld

Anyone try or know about these? The market-ware looks slick.

chum, looks like a great tool to me. i have read a few reviews and they seem to be all positive. for 100 bucks a year for unlimited service i think it is worth it. i probably am going to get one for myself.

Thanks Cap. Geez, how did I miss it?

CHECK THIS OUT DEVICE THE SPOT

I have been following the Globalstar (wrt to phones) debactle. I didn't realize this device used the same satellite network. They certainly don't advertise it. I had to dig thru the "terms and conditions" to find it. I wonder if Motorola is working on something similar? It's a slick concept.

It doesn't look so attractive now.

I got 'SPOT'

It's a nightmare. Has not worked once, customer service blames it on my location, which is in the ocean.....The are trying to charge me $13 for shipping to return/replace and are not willing to credit me for the month of the subscription while it didnt work....this is the worst product I have ever dealt with. They KNOW it don't work well. I am truly disgusted with their Customer Service, based in Canada. What's worse, is that they are now trying the old, "please hold" trick and wait for me to hang up. Happened 3 times today.

I just got one a couple of weeks ago....

I have tried it a couple of times inshore and it worked fine... I bought it so I can let the wife know if we decide to stay out for another day when were in the canyon.

Globalstar just got a large amount of money from the French and I think they are planing on sending up some new Sat's in the near future.

They had a promo around a month ago where they were giving away the unit for the cost of one years subscription so I figured what the hell.

I have never been part of the Sat phone mess with them so I can only go by my dealings with the spot and so far so good.

Update

I used my spot on my travels to and from Cape may last weekend and it worked great.

Since the wind was kickin.... the wife was keeping a close eye on me and could track my position without any problems.

I don't know about any other areas.... but between Sandy Hook NJ and Cape May NJ it worked without a hitch.

The real test will be offshore.... I will let you all know if it works in a month or so.

UPDATE FROM ME

So I sent the unit back to warranty and they agreed that is was a defective unit. Took about a week, and they sent me a NIB unit. Some discussions as to wether they will credit my account for the 2 months not being able to use the unit. Regardless, I got a new unit. Now I say this without 100% effort, but the new unit did not work the 1 time I tried it...Have yet to sit down and really apply myself....but should an emergency device require that kind of attention. I feel I got what I paid for, should have gone PLB or EPIRB.
