SCMA awards scholarship to leukemia survivor
April, 28 2009, 08:44 AM

The Southern California Marine Association awarded its annual $2,500 scholarship this year to Keven Holliday, a student who overcame chronic myelogenous leukemia to graduate from Murrieta Valley High School.

Holliday was diagnosed with the illness in his junior year. He started treatment immediately, returned to school for his senior year and maintained a 3.47 grade point average.

He also became a positive role model for his peers, assuming the role as spokesperson for his school's blood drives and leadership workshops. Today, Holliday's health is improving and he was recently accepted into Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he will major in business administration.

This is the fourth consecutive year SCMA has awarded scholarships to children under the age of 21 of SCMA members. Scholarship candidates must be full-time students and have plans to further their education at a university, technical institute or community college.
