since you asked,

No! i bought an e-tec. and i would buy that engine again. Mercury has an awful reputation. i would not buy a new whaler with one on it for that reason alone. isnt there the same lemon law for outboards?

John, I am sorry to hear about your troubles, and I hope that they will take care of you. I am looking to purchase a boat within the next year or so, and now I won't even consider a boat with verados hanging off the back. I hope Deep is right and with the help of this family, we can get this problem fixed. Looking forward to some updates of what mercury does for you.

My turn,

John I feel for you man, I wound up with a 2001 225 Opti pop...err sorry, Opti Max. Trouble with it right out of the box. I bought it because the 2 different 150 Opti Max's I had prior to that one were flawless. Had over 2000 hrs on one of them when I sold the boat. The 225 was another animal, trouble out of the box. The dealer was great, but could not solve the problem, Mercury Tec rep was called in and as soon as one thing was fixed another pop up. Computer, TPI's so no and such. I think it was 21 pages of repairs in the first year...then the power head went, then another power head. Within another year another power head, I paid for... Then the plug fowling started at $16.00 pop. 1 set a week then if I went trolling the bottom 2 had to be replaced before I could come back to the hill. Then the coils started going out 1 at a time. Air pumps died at 300 hrs, injectors were dying at the tune of 1 a week. Finely the second Merc dealer, I should say the mechanic went to bat for me with Mercury and somehow got then the give me a fully dressed 05 power head (new computer, everything) I had to pay for some gaskets and some other things but I now have a decent motor with few things going wrong. I was told I would have 2 years of warranty but come to find out the serial # was removed from this power head and that opened another can of worms that had to be taken care of before the new dealer could work on it but I can count on this one to work now.
Here is the # for Mercury Costumer Relations 920-929-5040 Brian was who I dealt with and honey worked better than salt to get things that you need done. Sad to say but it may take another class action law suit with Mercury to get satisfaction on the Verados side of things. My feeling is that it is another computer thing going on and once a motor comes out, the EPA will not let manufactures change computers on that model year and the manufactures are forced to try and fix the major crashes that they are having. Sucks, but that is the way it is with all brands. I would think by now if Mercury would change out your power heads with new fully dressed power heads, your problems would go away. Every motor manufacture makes some lemons, I saw a boat with 3 gray motors have 2 crap out at the same time today...glad they had the 3rd...

You want the long or the short answer. I'll give you the short: If you don't have any confidence in the motors on the boat it is not worth having! I have been around alot of outboards and the ones that seem to be tied to the dock with problems the most are always the black ones. We built a custom center console and put Yamahas on it and have had ZERO problems. The boat was charter fished and run hard. Not saying Yamahas don't have problems, I just don't think as many.

I can't believe you waited so long to go public with the story.
I would have given it a year at best. I understand thinking business opps may come up but I think a year would have been long enough.

The sad thing is I'm sure a merc rep has seen this and still hasn't chimed in.

And no if I ever went outboards again I would go Etec
