I have been fishing with a "field-test" model of the upcoming Penn 12VSX, it has been excellent for many offshore applications like you describe.
It is essentially a smaller version of the 16VSX, but there are 3 versions:
12V- single speed light line/light drag [12-30 pound test] version
12VS- 2-speed light line/light drag version
12VSX- 2-speed [topless frame], heavy line/heavy drag [40-50 pound test] version.
If you are not in a hurry, these are due on store shelves sometime after New Years'.
