Well I guess I learned the hard way. I use white lithium grease on the main and rod bearings when I rebuild an engine. I've had good results with it. Last year when I was going through my Senator's, I thought hey use the "good stuff". Don't do it, reels got stiff ecspecially when it got good and cold. Took them down today, the grease got real tacky. Cleaned everything and used the blue Penn grease to go back together, all are very smooth once again.

Blue Yamaha marine grease Alan Tanni uses which I only use now, Red Penzoil ie basically the same composition as avet grease. I have used both and they have worked well. Just dont use it on the spool berrings if you plan to have as much free spool spin as possible. My 30 and 40 rigs I've used here in PA when it was really cold and there was no differece than in Cali ,Florida or Mex. Thanks for the tip on the lithium grease. I have wanted to use it but was not sure.

OH NO! well, i just thought it was because my basement is 40 that the reels didnt feel to smooth...ive made it about half way through 8 tiagras using the white lithium stuff, but i guess i need to find something different if thats not good stuff... that sucks

so yamaha marine grease or cals from smooth drag... man it sucks when someone tells you its good and then you find out it actually isnt

White lithium gets real gunky when it gets cold. I know that from personal experience on motorcycles/cars etc.

i have drag grease, but i need grease for the gears and the screw holes and everything in between. so is cal's the best for this? someone else said yamaha marine grease? also, i looked at the thread about rebuilding a penn 30, are there are step by steps for shimano 50s? thanks guys

The Cals is an all purpose grease. For screw holes Alan recommends CorrosionX, as he has seen greased screws bust the frame. I don't know the mechanics of it, but ask him and he will explain.

The tolerances between screw and threaded screw hole can be so tight that when grease is added it "seals" the threads/hole. Air then gets trapped in the screw hole. As pressure is exerted on the screw as it is being screwed in it compresses the trapped air. Too much force and the surrounding aluminum cracks. Also read about using the Corrosion X and potential for similar problems.

You can use Cal's grease for drags AND greasing the internal parts...it's a universal grease.

I use Cal's and Penn's grease and oil too...Corrosion X works very well too.

The marine grade grease (Yamaha and OMC brands are very similar) works great as well...it is a lot heavier than the others though...

The heavier greases and lubes are going to thicken up in cold temperatures so you have to make your choice of lubes according to the conditions you'll be fishing in.
