Great thread here. A good coat of grease on the reel frame on the inside, packed main berrings in the handle and main side berring mean you really got to open the reel up, I would suggest using Alan T's tutorials to help. The corrosion x in the spool berrings to help the spin and even better spin if you open them up, carb cleaner them and blow them out and then drop the X on the berrings open or closed it is your choice. If you pack the grease in the spool berrings it will slow your free spool down considerably and not cast or freespool its best. It is up to you. If it is a reel than will not be cast, Alan says to pack them all to protect from salt water intrusion and keep your gear protected and working its best longer.

I just purchased a small 3oz size grease gun at Lowes so I could set it up as Alan Tani recommends. The gun came with lithium grease and the refills were the same. I'm glad I made the extra stop and didn't try using what came with it. BTW... I use the drag grease (Cals or Shimano) just on the drags simply because it's more expensive. I use "marine" grease or CorrosionX everywhere else.

If you haven't set yourself up with the Alan Tani grease gun setup do it. I estimate it has taken 1/4 - 1/3 off the amount of time it takes me to service my reels, and does a much better job.

I see that yahama grease is preferred, but what's wrong with regular wheel-bearing "marine" type grease? Any opinions on Amsoil grease? i used that on my engine and it worked great. It came highly recommended by the Yahama techs. Thanks for the insight.

Just to be clear, I am using Cal's for the drag and interior, talking about grease for screw holes here.
