I've been out of this for a while so please bear with me. Is it a mus to use a topshot when using Yo-zuri?, or just a preferance? Any pro's and cons would be appreciated.
the hollow spectra and mono top shot are very popular among the west coast tuna fishermen and long range boats. Still hasn't really caught on yet on the east coast with the exception of a few people that I know. I am sure that spectra can be used without the top shot and it is more of a personal preference.
Capt. Mark Deblasio introduced me to this over the winter and switched over all my reels. Capt Mark has used the specta/mono while fishing with Desire Sportfishing www.fishdesire.com and gets the spectra and topshots from wind ons by Basil in New Jersey.
For trolling, I don't like braid. When you're on a moving boat you don't need the extra line capacity and the thinner braid will be wicked tough to untangle when you get the inevitable bird's nest. For chunking though, where you are fishing from a dead boat, the extra line capacity you get with the braid is IMHO worth the switch. So I have several rods/reels filled with hollow spectra with topshots that I use for chunking.
