If they don't swim right with a single without a swivel you don't have the hook point in the right position It has to be straight up or down Up is best Down means you will have hook sets in the lower jaw not good You want a upper jaw hook up as this is the highest percentage because it give the best angle to the angler In the lower jaw a fish can get leverage by pointing down This makes it much harder to turn the head It also exposes the line to more area to chaff Ask any tournament Bass fisherman
don't know if this really applies, but I've learned a lot from the local plug builders and surf guys around here. One tip is that when the bluefish are around, treble hooks will end up stuck in some soft fleshy part of your body sooner or later. They always switch to singles or doubles but of the knowledgeable people I've talked to suggest just cutting off one or two legs of the treble as it helps preserve the balance of the plug. The idea that the heavy center section will be closer to the dynamics by which it was designed.
This is something from a world where the plugs are built by hand, one-off. These guys tweak and tune each one to be perfect so it might not be as critical or effective on mass-produced lures.
