B.C.,
Here are some tips. It sounds like you stand-up fish. If you are stand-up fishing you will not want you rods longer than 6'. Also, make sure you rods have wind-on guides. Wind-on's are gaining popularity and I don't think this will stop anytime soon. Another decision to make is if you want curved butts or strait butts. If you go with the uni-butt or stora-butt system then you can switch if you decide you like one better. I highly recommend the stora-butt system because you can store the reels in very small compartments in your boat (less prone to theft).

We started a new Flordia Gulf series that is an excellent value. Quality wise you will not find anthing better on the market for the price. Give me a call or shoot me an email and I would be happy to discuss your options in depth.

Capt D...I've fished Chaos rods offshore, they are horrible. I have a few friends who run charter boats who bought them and fished them, a week later they were for sale. They are built well and look great using good components, but they load horrible!!! The sad part was the one guy was going to get them for little or nothing since he was going to be sponsored and he called them said they can have them back he doesn't want their logo or rods on his boat. I was less then impressed with them on an 80lb tuna. It felt nice until the fish was hooked. For anyone who goes offshore, not buying custom is a mistake, even if you only make a few trips a year. I only run my boat offshore maybe 4-5 times a year, but go on friends boats a few more. I bought custom because I will own my gear a while and once your already spending a lot, a few more bucks is not that bad for the great customization and the way better quality. The funny part is many custom rods are in the same price range as store bought rods, some customs can even be cheaper or the same.

Why spend all the $$$$ on WT guides and then have slick butts?

Why you ask? Why not I ask? For one thing the slicks are a ton lighter than any alum, and in having the Winthrops, which weigh next to nothing,,you have a rod here that can battle the biggest that swim and dont weigh anything. Who wants a heavy alum if you dont need it.Its what the doctor ordered and wanted. He is into serious stand up fishing,,taking on huge mako,,ect in tournaments worldwide. Did not want the weight and awkwardness of the alum. butts.
I am very suprised you would ask a question like that,,lol..I build what my clients request.

Sounds perhaps you might have a slight issue here Melton? Do you want me to follow your stuff up and comment because I would sure have fun with that...

I think Meltons question is legit, for a typical offshore fishermen using WT guides he will usually use a rod holder or a chair. Now given your client he has a special instance where he uses a different technique and for him using a slick butt makes some sense and is justified. Not sure why there is a need to attack Melton and say you will critique his gear when he asked a totally justified question and that I too would have wondered until I read how your client uses his rods. No need to go and get so defensive over a good question. There is no perfect rod for everyone and to each his own, but no need to insinuate drama.

hope you were able to make a decision and get some good gear that suits your fishing needs well. Let us know what you decided to go with.
