Question Shimano's Trevala jigging rod? anyone heard anything???

Hello, I wanted a fun rod for jigging tuna. Most of the tuna are going to be 40-60lbs but some will be up to 100lb and hopefully a little more! Anyways, I wanted to get Shimano's new Trevala jigging rod and put a Torium 30 on it. Shimano says that the extra-heavy action Trevala rod will handle tuna past 100lbs but I wanted some real people's opinions. Has anyone used this rod or heard any reviews about it? Does anyone have any other suggestions for a comparable jigging rod? I look forward to the replies. Thanks everyone! Tight lines! -tags11

Here is a link of a video of when some of us members went out on Cowboys boat(MAVERICK CHARTERS) and did some jigging! When it gets to the part where flatbottom gets pulled to the corner of the boat- that is the combo that is being used. Flatbottom eventually broke off, but it was around a 100 pound class tuna on the other end.

Maybe this will show you what it can do.

I bought one for the BFT chunking and caught a couple with it and didn't like it at all! It just doesn't have enough backbone to handle those bigger Bluefin! The rod actually felt like it was going to snap at any moment! Plus with the braid on, it cut through the foregrips because of the severe bend in the rod! One trip & I stopped using it. Other than that it has great action for jigging!
Just my personal opinion. Some guys like them some don't.

The review on the rods seem to be that they are a good entry rod ($) for jigging ,,but most hardcore jiggers or guys that want a better jigging rod stay away..check out the jigging master blanks, calstar makes a few GREAT blanks that the guys are now using for jigging..i just got the "NEW" Lamiglas blank for jigging..its nice. i will be building that soon. and hopefully someone will be able to test it.. click on the JPR logo and see the Jigging master...if you are near pa..stop by and check out the jigging stuff i got here, hey paul..think its worth the trip

Well I have one and I really like it. I have boated Halibut up to #80 with it and for it's size and weight I think it is amazing.
For $145 what do you have to loose?

How do you jig for tuna? I have never seen it done. I would think 100 lbs tuna would destroy a 30 class reel. That is just my thought. But there seems to be a lot of people in here that use it. I have only chunked and trolled for tuna. As far as the rod goes have no clue about them but I do know that you have a good choice as far as a reel goes. I have 2 torium 20's they are amazing for cobia, tarpon, big drum, and big stripers.

i have the ocea Jigger reels here the 4000P is nice for jigging. i think it pulls 33# of drag..power handles, holds enough line , norrow spool for ease of laying the line on..i also have a saltiga 30T setup for jigging, with the "new" 30# class of reel avail..they can handle fish over 100#..the Jap style of jigging use short rods and FAST strokes up/down. others use longer rods and do sweeping strokes,,i think the key is getting the lure at the right depth..which is why some guys add a topshot of PE line when jigging

There is several ways of doing it. When you locate the fish drop a 8 oz. diamond jig down to the depth they are at and you can either just twich the tip so the jig mave move just a little bit or you can bounce it good 1 to 2 ft or you can really pop the rod 3 ft or more, but honestly I get most of my hits when I just twich the jig a little!! And we do all this drifting not anchoring. But it can be done both ways to success!

I use a Torsa 30 on a Loomis 40 to 60 which is perfect and can handle any Tuna up to 150 lbs!
