sticking handle on shimano 130 (salt build up)

Hi I routinely wash down my reels after use, but on of my Shimano 130s is having trouble w/ the crank handle. It's very stiff. Any recommendations on how to remove in order to get the salt build up out.

The location where a wrench goes on is just part of the mechanism that turns. Wondering if I'm supposed to use a pipe wrench or something?

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks - Ed

Is it the new style crank or the old style. I believe the old style handles are pressed on to the tube. I've had good luck with spraying brake cleaner into the small hole on the handle at the end of the pivot rod. (Not the holes on the handle end caps, they are just covers) This will clean out the gunk and then you can lube it with oil.

I'd guess it's new -less than 4 years old. Here's a pic. Does the cap at the end of the handle come off and expose a bolt of some sort? If so how? Do you pry it off? It almost looks like a detent ball.

i'm guessing the easiest (and best) solution here is to just soak the handle in corrosion x. the handle is riveted together making service next to impossible. new handles are pretty expensive. maybe try the corrosion x first. please let us know how it works out. thanks! alan

If all else fails you could upgrade to a T-Bar handle.

Doesn't look like the handle comes off the crank in the diagram... Has anyone done this successfully?

Help - it's amost the weekend.

Take the entire handle off and soak it in corrosion x as recommended above. I put it back on the reel then take a two foot section of dacron or waxed nylon line. I make a few wraps around the handle then holding each end of the string I pull back and forth in a back and forth action. This gets the handle spinning pretty good and should loosen it up...

    Ed,
That is the "old" style 130. We have the same ones and have had that happen to virtually every one. Unfortunately it is a flaw that doesn't seem to be avoidable (we wash and clean after every trip as well). In addition to that, you will soon see that it will start to loosen up- we had one come completely off during a fight with a giant. Luckily we saw it worsening and had a handle waiting to replace the broken one- when it finally came off, we lowered the drag and put the boat in gear, running in the opposite direction to keep pressure on the fish while we swapped out handles. Luckily we were still able to get the fish. We got the whole thing on video, pretty cool. So be careful with it- Like someone suggested, just get a T-bar handle and you'll be much happier.

Thats ironic. I had one come tight on a the same 130 a couple weeks back. Same thing. Im just having the handle replaced. 1st problem I have ever come into with the larger shimano reels.
