Starter Books

Hello all, I'm new here and would like to start building my own rods. I was wondering what is the best overall books for getting the basics? I'm primarily want to build saltwater rods (live bait King mackeral to stand-up Tuna ). Might even want to build a Med. light spinning rod for specks. any rate I'm just looking for info on the basics, like spineing a rod, locating guides etc.

Every time I see the phrase "Risky Business" all I can think about is that Tom Cruise movie...."Okay, which one of you guys is the U boat captain..."

Anyway, sorry about that....first off, welcome to SFC! The best book out there is Advanced Custom Rod Building by Dale Clemens. It covers everything you need to know and is the bible for rod builders.

Beyond that, check out rodbuilding.org and there are lots of FAQs as well as a forum that has answered just about any question you can think of.

Finally, don't be afraid to post on up here. We've got a growing contingent of rod builders here on the site and everyone is more than helpful.

to tell you the truth..books are great and all
BUT
if at all possible get a "hands on" lesson
you will learn so much easier than trying to figure out how to do it by a book
shoe gave you a couple good ideas
and get the mudhole catalog..they have some rodbuilding tips
the guys here are more than willing to help
so just keep asking for help when you need it

Thanks for the replys, I'll try to find that book. Is there anybody on this forum that builds rods in eastern NC that might let me see their process first hand? I agree hands on is better than just reading. I've ordered the mudhole catalog and now I'll try and figure out what tools I'll need. I can't wait to start on my first rod.

Take a look on the mudhole web site - there are some introductory videos that are pretty helpful.

Also look in the video section here - a couple of members have posted some great tips...

If you can find iit, maybe amazon, Dale Clemens how to build a fiberglass fishing rod. It got me started, now I just need to spend more time in the rod shop.
