    Spiral question

I have decided to do a spiral wrapped rod for the first time and have a question. If I'm building a 6' 500g gram rod how does the transition need to be set up? I know the first guide is normal or slightly kicked about 5 degrees or so. Then one or two guides going to the underside and then the 180 guide. My question is how far apart do these transition guides need to be?

Do I just set it up like regular, but spiral it or is there a special formula used to calculate the distance between guides?

    Thanks

Byrd I made my first two spirals this spring, so take that for what it's worth, but I started the transition at the second guide. Then I put the rod (jig rod so it had quite a bend) under load and did some basic lay out of the guides. What I found is since the rod bent so much, I was actually able to make the transition pretty quickly and still keep the "flow" of the line. I think if it was more of a traditional blank then I wouldn't have been able to make the transition as fast since the bend of the blank, and therefore the line following it, would be more gradual and so a quick transition would look more like a hitch in the line. I'm not sure if that makes sense in words, but try laying it out and you'll see what I mean.

    Byrd,
What I do on this is take the traditional spacing that you would use for a conventional setup. Mark the blank for that spacing.

For easy math, I will use the following:

    1 - 4 7/16"
    2 - 9 1/4"
    3 - 14 5/8"
    4 - 20 1/2"
    5 - 26 15/16"
    6 - 34"

Guides 4,5 &6 are your transition guides. 6 will be at the 0 degree axis, 5 is at the 90 degree axis on either side and then guide 4 will be at the 180 degree axis. As for spacing leave guide 6 at 34" and guide 4 at 20 1/2" and then split the difference between the 2 and put guide 5 at 26 3/4".

I think the math is correct. I did it in my little head and couldn't take my shoes off to count correctly.

Paul is right tho, there are quite a few ways to do it.
