Probably because it doens't fit into TK's agenda and it also probably interferes with NERBS agenda!!!!

flatliner, I recived my shell yesterday looks super. I'm going to start the build tomorrow, I all so ordered some shell from inlayusa which is much thicker shell, and I have some 3M adhisive film i'm going to try on this shell looks like the same adhesive thats on the thinlam, and on this thicker shell I'm going to try some scrim shaw, as the thinlam looks to thin to try scrim shaw.

Great to hear. I put abalone on 2 rods last night and 2 more tonite. Did a pair with blood red tint and they are smokin. The other 2 were raw abalone with no coloring, beautiful. I will post pics tomorrow or Firday.
I am actually in the process of writing an article for Rodmaker Magazine that will outine the steps for both the thin lam and the raw abalone and how to install the veneer. I am hoping to have the article completed by the late summer or sooner. Whenever I have the time and creative energy to put the words to screen.

    Stay tuned.

    Hey guys,

I've been building abalone rods since 1998, most of the people using abalone think you must use vinegar, not true. The use of a heat gun and some alcohol works great. I occasionally put some of my abalone stuff on eBay. If you want to see some examples, go to Ebay and search for items for sale by Fat2na. I usually have an abalone gaff or at least one rod on. Also I have some abalone on my website at fat2na.com. It's good to see more and more rod builders using abalone. I tried to patent it back in the nineties but you can't get a patent like that.

Folks, I have been in contact with the Manufacturer for the Abalone sheets that I have been using. I have negotiated with Aqua Blue Maui in Hawaii. They have agreed to open up sales directly to rodmakers that want to buy shell veneer. The price for the shell is as follows:

Premium Paua Abalone $16.00 per sheet. Thats right, $16.00 per sheet. The adhesive back is $1.50 per piece and comes already applied to the shell. Each sheet is 9.5" x 5.5"!!!!! HUGE!!!!!!

One piece of veneer will do a 80 class rod with a 9" piece on the butt wrap section and 2" pieces under each guide and there will still be some left over. We were going to be a distributor for the shell, but I don't think the demand is going to warrant having so much on hand to cover the needs of customers. They can actually paint the backs of the shell to give it a different color tint in 300 different colors. Thats just too much for us to invest in at this point. So Scott at Aqua Blue Maui has agreed to deal directly with us to help further the use of the shell.
If you need it, contact Scotty at Aqua Blue Maui.

The shell sheets are 5.5" x 9.5" and come with sticky back adhesive that is impervious to the vinager when soaking. By dealing with them directly, the savings will be about $12.00 per sheet. THATS RIGHT $12.00 per sheet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, before you had to buy 3 sheets at a time from Hawaii lure at $25.00 per sheet. Now, you can buy 1 sheet at a cost of $15.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tHE CONTACT AT AQUA BLUE MAUI IS SCOTT: Scott's email address: aquablue@maui.net

This is a rodmakers exclusive. VERY IMPORTANT : You have to use my name, KEVIN KNOX in the email to get the pricing.

Have fun and give it a try........... affordably,
    Kevin

Im perfecting a different process that will make a heat gun and other tools a thing of the past. It involves a 20 minute process to bend the thin lam abalone. Stay tuned. I wont divulge until I know it works. A heat gun does nothing more than make the laminate flexible. I am softening it from the inside out.

I would be willing to bet you caught on to my technique, which is also softening the shell/laminate from the inside out for easy applications..............and how do you do that everyone asks right?????????? Well think about it a minute here,,how to you heat something from the inside out my fellow wizards?

    Ever microwave an egg??
The yoke gets hard/hot/cooked, inside first and the rest of the egg is still raw,,,,,,,,,use your handy microwave guys! There's your answer...I use the microwave,,soften's it right up,simple and easy to wrap.Experiment with your own microwave as each one is different!
I just had to let it out after reading everyones comments. Go get em guys,I am sold on and sticking to my marbled finishes.
