Someone please explain this for me

I must be missing something, on the Penn Peer 309 shouldn't the correct spelling be Pier 309 instead? The spelling peer refers to:

- look closely: to look very carefully or hard, especially at somebody or something that is difficult to see
- be partially or briefly visible: to be partially visible or appear briefly
- People who are equal in such respects as age, education or social class, as in peer group

And the spelling pier refers to:

- A raised structure, including bridge and building supports and walkways, over water, typically supported by widely spread piles or pillars

What am I missing here?

I just took a look at their website and only see a 309M not a Peer 309. Is this an older reel? Some early Penns were named after locations like Long Beach or Bayside. Is it possible that this is a place rather than a word?

Also, just found a refernce in their history to a Peerless model, so it may be an abbreviation.

The reel is very old. It just seems strange to me that they would spell it that way. I pulled up a website referring to Peer bearings, maybe that's what they're talking about. Thanks for your response, let me know if you find anything else.
