SHIMANO UNCOVERS PREMATURE WEAR ON SELECT
TYRNOS 2-SPEED REELS - REPLACEMENT PROGRAM IN PLACE
IRVINE, Calif. 8/22/06 -- Through its on-going quality control process, Shimano has
discovered a possible manufacturing flaw with a limited number of Tyrnos 2-Speed reels,
announces Brian Nolte, Shimano’s national service manager.
“The problem is that a sharp edge on the pinion gear can cause premature wear on
the anti-reverse pawls resulting in an anti-reverse failure,” said Nolte. “This only occurs
if the reel is turned at high speeds - such as when line is put on with a winding machine.
This premature war situation was found on a limited number of reels within three
different production codes.”
Nolte notes that Shimano was able to catch this issue very quickly and has already
replaced its inventory with corrected product. All shipments of the Tyrnos 20II and 20II
two-speed reels to dealers after July 1 do not have this possible problem. However, a
small number of reels did go to market prior to discovery that may have this flaw.
“In order to ensure excellent performance and durability that Tyrnos two-speed
reel are capable of, we are requesting that dealers and anglers return any TYR20II or
TYR30II reel with the production codes of DJ, DK and DL,” Nolte said. “The production
code can be found on a small sticker on the bottom of the reel. Only the first two letters
of the sticker are important - for example, a sticker that reads DL-P, means production
code DL.”
If your reel(s) do not have DJ, DK or DL as the first two letters of the production
code, then the reel does not have the possible flaw and is not covered under this
replacement program. In addition, if the reel does have DJ, DK or DL sticker on the
bottom of the reel foot, but has a second sticker that says “R”, then your reel does not
have the flawed pinion gear and does not fall under this replacement program.
To remedy the situation, Shimano will replace the returned reel at no charge with
a brand new reel and will pay the shipping both directions, notes Nolte. If your reel has
been used, and the sticker has worn off or disappeared, Shimano’s customer service staff
