Shimano Tyrnos 16 2 speed reel

new guy here just getting into offshore fishing and had a few questions about a set up i purchased. i went down to the local store and gave them my intentions and they set me up with a shimano tyrnos 16 2 speed reel and a shimano trevala jigging series rod. the reasoning was that i could catch 10lb fish all the way to 100lb fish. i liked the wide range so i picked it up. what are everyone's thoughts on this set up? it looks impressive and i cant wait to get out there next weekend for the venice rodeo!

    Tyrnos 16

    Landon:

Firstly, welcome aboard. SFC.com is a great place to get tips, first hand info and generally enjoy yourself. Sure beats watching TV.

I fish in Miami, and often wished for an all around rod, something that can be cast, trolled, dropped down on wrecks and used for multiple applications, especially when I head offshore on one of those party boats. Truth is it doesn't exist but with a bit of sacrfice in each catagory--you've got yourself s decent and well rounded set-up. I would have suggested a spinning rod (Shimano Saragossa reel) but the Tyrnos is a great priced, light weight and can last if cared for regularly.

Some of the pro's--is the strength vs. flex of the rod tip. Was intended to be used in conjunction with the Shimano Butterfly jigging system.

Also, the Tyrnos 16 has good drag for it's size, load it up with braid.

I keep that same set up as my "quick rod"...ie. when I'm running my boat offshore and come accros something interesting like floating debris or a board and want to drop something down like a heavy jig or a weighted ballyhoo and see if anyone's home. I've gotten mahi to rise from deep and got a few Wahoo that way. If I see some bottom structure on the machine, I can stop and quickly work a lure through the water column, starting at the bottom, this has led to mutton snapper, grouper and many Amberjacks and Cobia.

Cons.. Freespool isn't true enough for solid casting. But you can pitch it out.

Reel is priced OK, but the trevalla is overpriced....you've got it now so divide the expected number of fish by the price and maybe it will cost you $1 per catch...I wish it worked that way.

I love it for bottom fishing. Great for smaller species, such as snappers, and can handle bigger grouper...(if ur lucky).

Hope that covers it....and best of luck. Give us some details on where you fish etc...species targetted and boat info. Thanks.
